Kimberley Miners Welfare 5-0 Radford (East Midlands Counties League) 12.09.20
The opening day of Radford’s league season was one to forget as they were dispatched 5-0 by an impressive Kimberley Miners Welfare side.
A hat-trick from Jordan Smith, a header from Sam Brown and a wonderstrike from Sacha Markelic gave the Stags all three points.
It only took the hosts five minutes to break the deadlock, Matt Hopewell was deemed to have brought down his man and the referee pointed to the spot. Jordan Smith sending Joe Searson the wrong way to put the Stags ahead.
By the quarter-hour mark, Radford found themselves two behind as Sam Brown headed home from close-range.
A reaction was needed from the Pheasants and it did arrive but just not to the desired degree.
Both Buba Ceesay and Callum Smith had good chances to get Radford back into the match but that clinical finishing from pre-season just wasn’t there.
Then, as the first-half came to a close, Kimberley dealt the Pheasants a suckerpunch. Sacha Markelic firing a long range effort into the top corner – Joe Searson was unable to get anywhere near the new signing’s effort.
Radford appeared to halt the flow of goals after the break; it was a considerably more even encounter for much of the second-half. Smith went closest to pinching one back for Radford but he couldn’t make contact with a cross that fizzed across the face of goal.
However, hopes of a comeback in this early season encounter faded as Radford failed to find the back of the net. Then danger man Smith struck again. He earned his second of the game on 77 minutes after a swift counter-attacking move. The forward completed his hat-trick a minute from time to hand his side an impressive opening day victory.
After an encouraging pre-season, it will be a frustrating result for Radford – they had plenty of chances but the scoreline just can’t be ignored. Attention now turns to the FA Vase with the Pheasants looking to bounce back at Clipstone next weekend.
