It was a fantastic weekend for our local sides in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup with all involved going through to the First Qualifying Round of the famous old competition.
In midweek due to unfortunate circumstances both Carlton Town and West Bridgford were awarded byes into the next round of the competition with members of the opposition they were scheduled to face testing positive for covid-19 and whilst Talksport will get behind the Millers going forward with their backing from the Laura Woods Breakfast Show it is also the furthest West Bridgford have ever been in the competition and will be a first for them as they go into todays hat for the draw involving all clubs featured in the next round.
Joining Carlton and West Bridgford is Worksop Town who beat Anstey Nomads 2-1 in Leicester as first half goals from Luke Hinsley and Vaughan Redford put Craig Parry’s team on their way.
A late consolation ensured a few scary moments for the Tigers who held on to go through with Parry stating “There was a lot of huff and puff and a lot of effort from both sides. I am pleased with the result, but I think we can still get better.”
Another side through are AFC Mansfield who beat Cleethorpes Town of the league above as former Worksop winger Lyton Karckach scored in the fourth minute the games only goal.
And in their first run in the competition Newark FC who have been backed by one crazed supporter to win the competition outright with £25 at 5000/1 did not disappoint. Beating Maltby Main 4-0 in Yorkshire with goals from Kevin Bastos, Ben Hutchinson, Craig Westcarr and Nathan Stainfield ensuring their passage into unprecedented levels.
Look out for the draw involving all our local sides later today.
