Sutton United 0-1 Notts County (National League) 13.10.20
A last minute Kyle Wootton goal gave Notts all three points at Gander Green Lane as the Magpies march to a third successive victory that see’s them move to third in the table and narrow the deficit down to just one point behind leaders Hartlepool United who drew in their match last night.
It wasn’t the perfect performance, far from it, in a scrappy match down in South London but Notts without Wes Thomas with a virus and with star winger Cal Roberts on the bench seemingly due to fatigue, the Magpies had to dig in and work hard on the synthetic surface with the best effort coming from the talented Dutchmen Enzio Boldewijn who hit the bar in the opening twenty minutes with a shot that bounced up off the hard pitch.
In the second half Notts had their own scare when Slocombe received treatment following a goalmouth scramble before Enzio again went close put through by Reeves only to be tackled brilliantly by Wyatt before Lacey headed over the resulting corner.
Slocombe saved from Sho-Silva who turned, spun and shot straight at the County goalkeeper on sixty-one, the best chance the home side produced all night.
On 87, Notts had a fantastic opportunity to win the game when O’Brien slid in Wootton, relatively quiet on the night the striker drilled low to the keepers near post but Bouzanis was equal to the task with a fine save. Moments later however it was the goalkeepers poor clearance that was capitalised on as Wootton was put through to slide home a winner that sent the travelling players and staff into raptures.
A huge win for Notts on a night where they shown that doing the ugly stuff was also in their repertoire. Full Back Richard Brindley saying after “We knew tonight could be an ugly game – these types of wins show we can dig in”.
Next up for Notts is Maidenhead at Meadow Lane on Saturday where Neal Ardley will hope his side can make it four wins on the spin.
