Late Lolly Strike Gives Hughton’s Reds Win

Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Nottingham Forest (EFL Championship) 17.10.20

Nottingham Forest got their first win of the season at Ewood Park today after a late Joe Lolley deflected effort sank hosts Blackburn to record the Reds first three points under their new Manager Chris Hughton.

Taking control of his first game as Reds boss, Hughton named a familiar looking side and one that might have looked very much in the style of his predecessor Sabri Lamouchi with the Reds 4-2-3-1 up against a team previously flying high in Blackburn.

The Reds starting on the front foot though as Freeman crossed early to Grabban who’s attempt was blocked by a former Red in Daniel Ayala. The away side having the better of the early exchanges with neither sides’ goalkeeper being troubled in the opening half hour.

The best effort by Blackburn in the first half came a couple of minutes before the break, a 35 yard left footed strike by another former Forest favourite, Ben Brereton, who’s shot was easily saved by Samba.

An injury to Jack Colback meant that Harry Arter would replace him at the break as Nottingham Forest continued to press with a big chance missed on 51 minutes as Yates headed wide from Grabban’s cross.

Forest pressed more and Figueiredo headed a corner that was saved by Kaminski before the Rovers keeper got down well to save from Sammy Ameobi on 75. Reds winger Ameobi went even closer with just two minutes remaining as he smashed the inside of the post with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot and just as the goalscoring luck looked against Forest, a speculative effort by Joe Lolley deflected off Bradley Johnson and into the net for a winner that they perhaps deserved, despite the home sides dominance in possession.

A first much needed win which lifts the Reds out of the relegation zone, one that will give confidence to the players and one that has proved the new Manager to have an immediate positive influence on the dressing room. Next up is back to back winnable home games with Rotherham on Tuesday followed by Derby County at the City Ground on Friday night.

Forest: Samba, Christie, Figueiredo, McKenna, Ioannou, Yates, Colback (Arter 46), Lolley (Sow 90), Freeman, Ameobi, Grabban (Taylor 74).
