Notts County 2-3 Maidenhead United (National League) 17.10.20
Four Notts players prior to kick off tested positive for covid but remarkably the match still went ahead with Manager Neal Ardley having to reshuffle his starting pack. The Magpies without the likes of Cal Roberts, Wes Thomas and Jim O’Brien however didn’t seem too affected in taking an early lead as Mansfield Town loanee Jimmy Knowles struck his first Notts goal after Damien McCrory cut back to the young striker.
Enzio Boldewijn might have made it two inside ten minutes striking a shot inches wide of the post before an unlikely equaliser came from Sam Barratt after a scramble inside the Notts area.
The Magpies had a scare when the visitors corner was headed over by Ryan Upward ahead of the half hour but County immediately went up the other end and responded to retake the lead as Ruben Rodrigues burst forward to beat a defender and roll past the goalkeeper to net the Portuguese strikers first goal in County colours.
That lead lasted until 64 minutes when Barratt headed his second goal of the game and on reflection perhaps deservedly so, especially as Maidenhead weren’t afraid to come and have a go at the Notts defence.
And continue to attack they did, a third goal on 75 minutes proved to be the winner as Orsi raced through to poke past Slocombe and give the visitors the lead for the first time in the match.
With two minutes to go Turner might have levelled getting his head to Doyle’s corner but for it to be cleared off the line witth McCrory firing over the follow up.
A frustrating 24 hours for Notts who’s covid struck squad meant that they weren’t at full strength, Maidenhead taking full advantage to take all three points and end County’s run of successive wins in the division.
County: Slocombe, Chicksen, Lacey (Turner 85), Rawlinson, McCrory, Reeves, Doyle, Wootton, Boldewijn (Sam 78), Knowles, Rodrigues (Wolfe 69).
