Notts County 3-0 Wealdstone (National League) 27.11.20
Notts County beat playoff chasers Wealdstone last night in a convincing performance at the Lane that sees Neal Ardley’s side move into the top six on sixteen from nine played and a point below second where four teams below leaders Torquay have 17 points.
The Magpies bridge the gap on the table toppers from Devon to just six points from nine but more importantly for now, have shown form in a convincing display against a side in the league positions above them.
Enzo Boldewijn started the scoring on 15 minutes as Notts went out positive from the off spurred from their late win at Chesterfield last time out and just four minutes later the home side were 2-0 up thanks to Elisha Sam.
It wasn’t until late on when substitute Jimmy Knowles added further damage, in the final couple of minutes as he placed home from close range to round up a perfect night’s work.
Without Callum Roberts, watching from home, Notts gave starts to Elisha Sam and Ruben Rodrigues both playing a huge part as substitutes in the sides win last weekend. Sam almost immediately repaying the faith, shooting powerfully to force Istead in the Wealdstone goal to save on to the bar before Wootton’s header from the rebound was flicked over.
County didn’t have to wait long though, Enzio doing the damage, a second goal in as many games as he finished on the rebound from Ruben’s saved effort.
Then it was two, Elisha Sam nutmegging his opponent on the bye-line to cut in and finish, his second goal for the club and Notts enjoying themselves.
It could have been worse for Wealdstone as Istead saved from Sam and Rodrigues in a fabulous double save before Rodrigues tested his luck after good work from Boldewijn but to be denied by a goalkeeper who on the night was magnificent.
Notts continued to press for a third in the second half with Rodrigues denied by Istead again before Turner couldn’t muscle in a corner having three attempts as the ball bounced around. Wealdstone themselves going closest when Dennon got into the area but couldn’t pick a man at the back post.
More chances for Notts in a truly dominant display, substitute O’Brien seeing his late attempt blocked before Mansfield loanee Jimmy Knowles came off the bench to do what he does best. Tapping home from Wootton’s pass, a fabulous nights work from Neal Ardley’s men.
