Stags Make It Three In A Row

Mansfield Town 2-1 Salford City (EFL League Two) 05.01.21

A third league win in a row has taken Mansfield Town up to fifteenth in the league two table after Nigel Clough’s men tonight beat Salford City at the One Call Stadium.

An early George Lapslie strike followed by yet another goal for in-form striker Jordan Bowery helped the home side into a two goal first half lead, a lead they kept until the dying seconds of the match before Salford struck a late consolation that ensured a nervy few moments, but the Stags held on for victory as they continue to climb away from danger, resurgent under their new Manager who’s record since his arrival in November has seen eight wins four draws and just two defeats.

It took just fifteen minutes for Mansfield to open the scoring after George Lapslie capitalised on a poor clearance to strike home low first-time from 25 yards. Charsley made Hladky work in the Salford goal soon after but the Czech keeper could do nothing on the half hour to stop Bowery scoring his sixth goal in four games when the big number nine finished after good work from Perch down the right before a goalmouth scramble lead to the ball falling at Bowery’s feet.

Reid might have made it three but poked wide ten minutes before the break and in the second half Salford created their best opportunity when Elliott shot over before a great tackle by Sweeney prevented Wilson from close range.

Despite the advantage, Mansfield continued to press for a third and Farrend Rawson tested Hladky with a header that was tipped over on the hour with Benning shooting wide on 72 minutes another opportunity to increase the lead spurned.

In the final minute Bernard prodded home a late Salford corner from close range but Clough’s men held on for a win which takes them a win away from the top half of the table.

Next is the luxury of the FA Cup on Sunday as the Stags travel to Cheltenham with a fourth round very much on the agenda for the winners.
