Nottingham Forest 1-0 Cardiff City (FA Cup Round Three) 09.01.21
Nottingham Forest are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after a hard earned but professional win against fellow Championship opponents Cardiff City at a sunny but cold and snappy City Ground today.
An early Lyle Taylor goal after just three minutes was enough to take Chris Hughton’s side through, the former Charlton strikers fifth goal of the campaign came after the recalled Gaeten Bong raced down the left to centre low for the London born Montserrat international to volley home and get Forest off to the perfect start in front of the empty-seated Bridgford End.
The Welsh side were largely the better of the two teams thereafter but rarely troubled Jordan Smith in the Reds net as a defence superbly marshalled by Joe Worrall and Scott McKenna stood firm to every attack.
Late in the second half Bluebirds substitute Junior Hoilett coming closest to an equaliser, firing a volley over the crossbar when it looked easier for the Canadian winger to hit the target.
In all it wasn’t pretty in a match of few chances, but job very well done with the early goal allowing a professionally drilled Reds to defend their lead which they did extremely confidently. Forest now six unbeaten in league and cup.
Manager Chris Hughton delighted with his side’s performance stating after the match “I’m pleased to be through.” Hughton said during the post match Press Conference “it’s a clean sheet. I’m delighted with how we defended in that second half.”
Next up for Forest is Millwall at the City Ground on Saturday, back in league action, by then the Reds will know their destiny as they await the draw of the fourth round of the FA Cup to see who they get next. The Reds will be ball number eleven in Monday nights draw aired live on the BBC.
