Cheltenham Town 2-1 Mansfield Town (FA Cup Round Three) 10.01.21
Mansfield Town were beaten by Cheltenham and knocked out of the FA Cup at the third-round stage after a tightly fought contest at the Jonny Rocks Stadium that went to extra time.
The match got off to the perfect start for the visitors when Bowery cut back for McLaughlin who smashed hard and low into the back of the net to give the Stags a third minute lead.
It didn’t take long for Cheltenham to fight back though as Lloyd hit the cross bar on sixteen minutes and as the home side searched for an equaliser, May might have done better to find the target on 28 minutes when his strike from inside the box went blazing over the bar.
The home side continued to press and had a penalty waved away on 67 minutes when Sweeney looked to have tripped his man whilst May dragged an effort wide three minutes later.
Just as it was looking to be Mansfield’s day it was May who finally got his reward on 73 minutes, the striker cut in from the left to curl home right footed past the standing Stech with nothing the Czech goalkeeper could do to stop the ball from reaching his left hand corner of the net.
Mansfield thought they had won it on 83 minutes when Sweeney finished brilliantly but to be adjudged offside and the Stags continued to press in extra time as Reid forced Griffiths into a save before Lapslie shot deflected wide and agonisingly the wrong side of the goal.
But it was to be no repeat of the victory against Dagenham as with ten minutes left of the added half hour it was the home side that took the lead as a long Ben Tozer throw in was headed home by Will Boyle to spark Robins delight and take the home side through.
Manager Nigel Clough disappointed after the match said “If you’re going to lose, you give everything, and we did that.”
He continued “We’re very disappointed to be out of the FA Cup. To put so much effort in and battle as much as we did today, I don’t think we could’ve given any more.
Next up for the Stags is a trip to Oldham Athletic on Wednesday where a return to winning ways in League Two could see Mansfield move in to the top half of the table for the first time this season.
