Southend United 0-1 Mansfield Town (EFL League Two) 23.01.21
A fifth successive league win, ironically since drawing with Southend at Field Mill in December, has seen a meteoric rise for Mansfield Town who today sit just five points below the playoffs and more impressively, eleven points ahead of the drop zone.
Nigel Clough’s men have soared up the table and although currently thirteenth, their impressive form, the best in the league will have future opponents running scared.
Stephen Quinn made his first start for the Stags and he immediately got to business in creating the sides first opportunity of the match too, crossing in after just two minutes before Charsley’s volley was well blocked.
Kyle Taylor firing wide from range at the other end the first attempt on goal for the home side after six minutes play.
McCormack was next to shoot wide for Southend as Mark Molesley’s side, bottom of the league but just a point from safety, searched for an opener much needed with Aidan Stone called into action on fifteen minutes saving well, a deflected effort from Akinola.
Mansfield fought back and went closest themselves when Reid’s effort was cleared off the line, the nearest Mansfield would come to opening the score in a first half otherwise of few chances.
It was Reid who was first to strike at goal in the second half too, firing wide of goal on 47 minutes before Dieng headed off target for the shrimpers.
But Mansfield got their goal on 64 minutes when Reid was on hand to fire home the rebound after Bowery’s shot was saved by Oxley.
Southend would push for a leveller but the Stags defence held strong, with six minutes remaining the home side had Dieng sent off for a second bookable offence and with a man advantage Lapslie could have wrapped things up late on when his cross come shot was grasped by Oxley.
It didn’t matter though as Mansfield came away from Essex with all three points, a clean sheet and a second successive goal for Jamie Reid too, the Stags next up host Bolton on Tuesday where a win could take them into the top ten.
