Barrow 2-0 Mansfield Town (EFL League Two) 06.03.21
Mansfield Town were beaten for the fifth time in six games as Ryan Sweeney was sent off before two second half goals gave relegation threatened Barrow a huge victory towards survival.
The win takes Barrow out of the bottom two in the division but level on points with Southend United in 23rd on 29 points, just eight now behind the Stags who are currently in freefall.
It was another frustrating day for Nigel Clough’s men who gave a good account of themselves in a tight first half before falling away in the second period after Ryan Sweeney was sent off on 63 for hauling down Scott Quigley for his second booking of the match.
The Stags, who were forced to make a change in goal as Aidan Stone got injured, defended well up until the 74th minute when Kelland Gordon tried to chest a ball down on the edge of his area and was robbed by Patrick Brough who slid home through the legs of substitute goalkeeper Marek Stech.
To their credit, Mansfield hit back and forced Joel Dixon into a save when Jordan Bowery headed a Mal Benning free kick on target but another costly defensive error on 77 minutes was fully capitalised again by the potent Brough, Gordon again failing to clear his lines as the left wing back lurking at the back post was able to smash home and put the game out of sight.
After the match Manager Nigel Clough stated “It’s possibly the worst day we could’ve had with things going against us, but a lot of it was our own doing today.”
“Losing the goalkeeper and getting a player sent off, the minimum we still expected was a 0-0.
“Then we go and make that sort of error. That’s all that’s costing us. It cost us at Bradford, it cost us at Harrogate and it cost us a result today.
The Stags will now look to bounce back at home to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night, the Robins however won’t provide an easy task for Mansfield as currently they sit top of the league.
