Cardiff City 0-1 Nottingham Forest (EFL Championship) 02.04.21
A smash and grab of sorts for Nottingham Forest who produced a typical Sabri-style performance but one very much in the creation of the man of now, Chris Hughton, as the Reds beat Cardiff by a single goal in Wales.
James Garner’s first half finish was followed up by some fabulous defending and yet another clean sheet as Forest push themselves further away from the dropzone and towards safety for another Championship season ahead next term.
An early chance for Cardiff, the first of the game, came on seven minutes when Bacuna’s firm shot from inside the area was well held by Samba who dived low to his right, ten minutes later the Bluebirds missed another opportunity as Sang headed over the bar.
Forest soon came back into the game and Ameobi cut in to shoot left footed, but a deflection took the ball wide of the posts and on 30 minutes, during the Reds best spell of the game, James Garner was soon on the end of a superb move where Ameobi turned and found Christie who crossed low and hard for the Manchester United loanee to smash home and put the Reds one up.
The Reds defended superbly thereafter with Will Vaulks going close just before half time with a long-range drive which had Samba sprawling but failing to trouble the target.
An early chance in the second half for Forest as Garner shot low, saved by the fingertips of Phillips but thereafter Cardiff laid siege as the Reds defence stood firm, Yates throwing his body on the line before Cyrus Christie doing the same, Scott McKenna superb as Mick McCarthy’s men threw the kitchen sink at the Reds.
On 84 Flint headed over before Brown headed down deflected and into the hands of Samba two minutes later with Forest hanging on until the end with another solid defensive display. A twelfth clean sheet under Hughton this season.
