Friendly Wins For Forest – Stags – Notts

It was a good night on the road for our counties top three clubs as they all recorded pre-season friendly victories and all without conceding too.

Newly promoted Premier League big spenders Nottingham Forest made the short trip to League One Burton Albion where they won 1-0 thanks to a Steve Cook diving header on 57 minutes.

Cook headed home an out-swinging Cafu corner for the only goal of the game, the Reds ending the match with a large number of youngsters on the pitch, including the likes of Finn Back, Riley Harbottle, Alex Mighten and Dale Taylor.

Ahead of the game, the Reds learnt that news of an injury to midfielder Ryan Yates would keep him out of action for at least a month, Forest are still rumoured to be interested in Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien but the side started the match at the Pirelli Stadium with a central pairing of Jack Colback and Cafu.

A tight first half was probably edged by the home side but after the winner midway through the second half, Forest fended off any pressure to show their steely grit of last season is still within. One injury to Lyle Taylor who came off early in the second half a concern, Forest will next head to Barnsley on Saturday for their third friendly match of the summer.

Fifth tier Notts County were also in action locally at National League North side Alfreton Town with the Magpies winning 2-0 at the Impact Arena.

A Cal Roberts penalty, won and taken himself, on the stroke of half time putting Luke Williams side ahead at the break, before Ed Francis left a leg out to deflect Kairo Mitchell’s effort home on 58 minutes wrapping up a good nights workout.

The Magpies were able to finish the match with youngsters Luther Munakandafa and Brad MacGregor on the field, the under 19 stars contributing to a third straight pre-season win for Notts.

Notts County Starting XI: Brooks, Chicksen, Baldwin, Brindley, Taylor, Adebayo-Rowling, Bajrami, Vincent, Austin, Roberts, Langstaff.

Also in Derbyshire, were League Two side Mansfield Town who headed to the idyllic settings of Matlock Town to win 1-0 against the Northern Premier League outfit.

New signing Hiram Boateng with the only goal of the game midway through the first half as he slid home after good work by Lucas Akins to assist, the Stags had a scare ahead of the break as Matlock crashed the crossbar but a better second half had Nigel Clough’s men on the search for more goals before a large number of changes upset the games flow somewhat, with the Stags in the end happy with their workout and a second win of the summer.

More positive news coming out of Field Mill, the club have signed Goalkeeper Christy Pym on a season long loan deal from Peterborough United.

Elsewhere in the world of friendly football, Non-league Basford United were held 2-2 with Long Eaton United as Anthony Dwyer netted his fourth goal in as many games with a first in amber, for Brad McGowan whilst Worksop Town had a huge 9-0 win over Rossington Main, Liam Hughes amongst the many goals with a hat-trick.
