Stags Hit Retford For Unlucky Thirteen

There were mixed fortunes for the counties women’s clubs on Sunday afternoon as the Nottinghamshire FA County Cup took centre stage.

Andi Bell’s Mansfield Town side, sitting third in the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division, top-scored, and eased into the next round of this year’s competition courtesy of an emphatic, 13-0 win, on the road at a Retford side struggling at the wrong end of the Notts Girls & Ladies League Seniors One.

The Stags led by seven at the break, Millie Edwards the first of three players to notch hat-tricks, whilst Erin James added two; the second period was similar to the first, one-way traffic, and would be one which would see Olivia Wheatcroft add a treble to take her tally to four for the game, with Grace Shipman also added a hat-trick, the other being added by Ava Williamson.

Mansfield Town – Amy Price, Chloe Hutsby, Monica Bowley, Georgina Clements, Millie Edwards, Gabriella Foulkes, Grace Shipman, Abbie Greaves, Ava Williamson, Erin James, Olivia Standeven (subs – Maia Taylor, Shannon Purdy, Olivia Wheatcroft, Libby Bartlett)

In an all-Arnold affair, Arnold Eagles dismissed visiting Arnold Town 8-0, whilst the clash of the two Uni sides went to penalties after Nottingham Trent University and University of Nottingham shared four goals, NTU winning 4-3 on penalties.

Keyworth United won 4-2 at home to Hucknall Town, and Notts County Reserves won by the odd-goal-in-five when away to Blidworth Welfare.

Only one League game was played involving Notts clubs, SJR Worksop slipping to a fifth straight defeat when home to Rotherham United.

Defeat for SJR, 5-0, would see the visitors. Fourth bottom, move within a point of their hosts as Jess Jones scored twice in the first half, Beth Howarth adding a third, inside the opening twenty-five minutes.

Rotherham added two more after the break to condemn their shell-shocked hosts to another defeat, Lori-Anne Tart curling home the fourth with twenty remaining, and Sidni Simmons wrapping things up in the closing minutes, firing home a free-kick from 25-yards out.

SJR Worksop – Olivia Walker, Abbie Lister, Lucie Spendiff, Harley Ratcliffe, Lauren Cundy, Leah Harrison, Charlotte Finch, Lauren Brogan, Emily Murphy, Alice Hill, Emily Myatt (subs – Amy O’Brien, Lily Brown, Robyn Snee)

The only other game played saw Notts County in FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands action, at home to Leafield Athletic.

Only one goal separated the two sides, the visitors getting that through Chloe Shirley, with less than fifteen remaining, tapping in from close range at the back post following a deep cross from Jessica Lowe.

Victory for the visitors keeps them sitting second, a point behind leaders Peterborough United (who were beaten by Nottingham Forest in the FA Women’s National League Cup Second Round), County meanwhile, they remain in fourth place now having won four, lost four, of their eight league games.
