Retford Held As Badgers Draw Blanks
There’s been plenty of non-league action this week, the majority of which came on Bank Holiday Monday, whilst Tuesday and Wednesday night saw the two Retford sides also take to the field.
On Tuesday, Retford’s Northern Counties East League Premier Division game at home to Thackley finished honours even following a 2-2 draw, the hosting Choughs letting slip a two-goal interval lead, whilst on Wednesday, Retford United welcome Tadcaster Albion, theirs finishing goalless.
So, to the Rail; the Choughs were two goals to the good inside twenty-five minutes as Iren Wilson opening the scoring on thirteen, and Bradley Hextall doubled the advantage ten minutes later.
Leading by two at the break, Retford let slip in the second forty-five, allowing Marcel Stepniewski in twice to score, and earn the visitors a share of the points, both Retford clubs level on eleven points (Retford United sixth, Retford seventh) going into the derby, at Cannon Park, on Saturday afternoon.
There was mixed fortunes on Bank Holiday Monday for higher, non-league sides; Worksop Town fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Oxford City in the National League North, whilst in the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands there was a 4-0 thumping for Carlton Town away to Shepshed Dynamo, the hosts netting twice in each half, whilst Basford United won 2-1 at home to Belper Town, Amarvir Sandhu and Tristan Thompson-Matthews with the goals wither side of the break.
Several matches were also played in the United Counties League, both the Premier North and Division One seeing Notts-based clubs in action; the former, on Monday, would see victories for Eastwood (2-0 at Kimberley Miners Welfare), and AFC Mansfield (2-1 over visiting Sheffield), whilst Hucknall Town fell to a 3-1 reverse against visiting Leicester Nirvana.
Second half goals from Jamie Walker and Tyler Blake gave Eastwood all three points in their derby win, whilst Kian Sketchley and Max Taylor netted for Mansfield in their; Callum Orange bagged for Hucknall but they were undone by a brace from the visitors’ Hassan Farouq.
Wednesday night meanwhile saw a six-goal thriller in the Premier North, Sherwood Colliery overturning a 2-1 deficit to win 4-2 late on away to Newark Town; Nathanial Crofts gave Sherwood the lead inside ten minutes, and it stayed that way until early in the second half.
Bradley McGregor equalised shortly after the restart, with Harvey Grice giving the hosts the lead before the hour mark; Ethan Wiesztort then levelled for the visitors as the game headed towards the final ten, before late goals from Jordan Preston, and a stoppage time winner by David Olatomide, gave the visitors the points.
Three games were also played out in the UCL Division One, the two on Monday seeing Southwell City win 2-0 at home to Selston, Zach Casburn and Joshua Steer both netting in the first half, whilst Dunkirk lost by the same when home to Sleaford Town.
Tuesday night meanwhile saw a goalless draw played out between West Bridgford Colts, and visitors Sandiacre Town, whilst the one game in the Nottinghamshire Football league saw Ruddington Village ease to a 4-1 success away to Kimberley MW Reserves, Ross Cochrane-Smith at the double for the victors.
There’s also been action for local sides in the North Midlands Development League recently, there being some eleven, Notts-based U21s, competing across three of the league’s four divisions.
SJR Worksop and Retford have sides in the Bob Beswick (NE) Division, Eastwood and Sandiacre Town in the Barry & Pam Crownshaw (SW) Division, along with Clipstone, Stapleford Town, West Bridgford Colts, Rainworth Miners Welfare, Teversal, Ollerton Town, and Worksop Town, competing in the Brian Bradley (SE) Division.
Early season action here has seen Clipstone open their campaign in mid-August with a 6-0 drubbing of hosts Worksop Town, goals coming from Lincoln Charles, Divine Iyamu, Oscar Pearce, Jorav Lidher, Cole Smith, and Max Meehan.
SJR Worksop won 4-1 on the road at Askern Miners in late-August, George Colton-Balogun’s brace being added to by Leyton Blunt and Kieran Wright, whilst on Tuesday night seven goals were witnessed in the game between Worksop Town and Stapleford Town.
The visitors would see both Charlie Ray Jackson and Don Snaddon bag braces in a 5-2 win, Noah Button also netting, with Jack Lewin and Yahir Barros scoring for the hosts.
