Tigers & Millers Return To Winning Ways

Worksop Town and Carlton Town returned to winning ways in their respective divisions on Saturday afternoon, the former having lost their last four prior to the trip to Marine.

On Merseyside, against a Marine side who’d only won two of their opening six matches themselves, the visiting Tigers were thankful of Vaughan Redford’s second goal of the season, five minutes into the second half.

Having conceded a corner, the Marine defence only cleared as far as Boyce, whose headed return into the mix was flicked home by Redford in the fiftieth minute for the only goal of the game.

It was a result which gave Max Dearnley, the Tigers shot-stopper, his first clean sheet of the season, and helped his side up to fifteenth in the National League North table.

WORKSOP TOWN – Max Dearnley, Deegan Atherton, Sam Essien, Rollin Menayese, Andrew Boyce (capt), Vaughan Redford, Kian Harratt (Ryan Viggars, 63), Oli Greaves, Lewis Whitham (Josh Wilde, 91), Mason O’Malley, Liam Waldock

Meanwhile, in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division, Carlton Town returned to winning ways following back-to-back losses, this time seeing off Barwell, 3-2 at home.

The sides went in level at the break, Nathan Watson’s opener cancelled out in first half stoppage time by Cuba Mitchell; fans were made until the closing stages of the second before further goals were added.

Millers captain, Matt Thornhill, restored the home sides’ lead on 73 minutes, Deen Master levelling again as the contest headed into the final ten; Charlie Carter meanwhile popped up with what the proved the winner, three minutes from time.

Carlton’s NPL rivals, Basford United, exited the FA Cup following a 3-1 loss away to Halesowen Town, despite taking an early lead through Amarvir Sandhu, after three minutes, the hosts going into the break leading, before adding a decisive third midway through the second period.

Eastwood’s emphatic start to the season continued in the United Counties League Premier North Division, bagging six for the second time in three outings, this time following a nine-goal thriller away to Aylestone Park.

Jamie Walker, his first from the penalty spot, and Tyler Blake, both helped themselves to braces, they overturning a 2-1, interval deficit; Ryan Wilson levelled shortly after, but the hosts retook the lead straight away in a hectic start to the second period.

A second equaliser came just before the hour mark, Walker grabbing his second of the game, before Blake snatched a quick-fire brace of his own, he netting in the 63rd and 64th minutes, before Revarnelle James claimed a sixth at the death.

Elsewhere in the UCL Premier North, a lone-goal from Ben Henderson gave Kimberley Miners Welfare victory at Hinckley, keeping them within touching distance of the chasing pack at the top, whilst there was also a 3-1 win for AFC Mansfield away to Gresley Rovers.

Hucknall Town (2-1) and Newark Town (302), both lost on the road, at Heanor Town and Blackstones respectively, and Selston exited the KO Cup, on penalties, when home to Deeping Rangers.

Action aplenty in Division One was overshadowed by the serious injury suffered by Clipstone player/assistant manager, Jobe Shaw, in their abandoned game at home to Harrowby United, whilst there were big wins for both Southwell City, 5-0 at Gedling Miners Welfare, and Clifton All Whites, 4-1 at home to Dronfield Town.

Games between Cotgrave – Sandiacre Town, Louth Town – Shirebrook Town, Pinxton – West Bridgford Colts, and Swallownest – Dunkirk, all finished in draws, with Radford being edged by visitors Maltby Main, and Stapleford Town losing at South Normanton Athletic.

The Northern Counties East League Premier Division saw the first Retford derby of the season, and, like the last meeting between the two, finished honours even with a 2-2 draw, Bernard Nsiah’s second half brace earning Retford a share of the spoils after Matthew Tootle had given hosts Retford United an interval lead, and Olver Wilson had restored it before the hour mark.

Linby Colliery Welfare were the only Notts-based side to register a win in the Central Midlands Alliance, Charlie Tassi’s brace helping them to a 3-1 home win over Graham Street Prims in the South, whilst there were defeats for Blidworth Welfare, SJR Worksop, RHP Sports, Teversal, and Worksop Town Reserves.

As for the Nottinghamshire Football League Premier Division, leaders Beeston lost their hundred percent start to the season, losing 2-0 at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, Awsworth Villa (won 3-1) and Woodthorpe Park Rangers (drew 2-2) moving within two points with positive outcomes themselves.

AC United sit fourth following their 3-1 home win over Notts Olympic, fifth place Collingham won 4-1 at Kimberley MW Reserves, whilst the only remaining, unbeaten side, Meden Vale Colts, are in sixth, they having drawn again, this time 2-2 at Ruddington Village.

Of the remaining games in the division, Arnold Town enjoyed a 5-1 win on the road at Stapleford Town Reserves, and Keyworth United won 4-2 when home to struggling Newark & Sherwood United.
