Basford United have announced the arrival of Mark Clifford, who re-joins the club as Head Coach.<\/p>\n

Clifford will add to manager Steve Chettle\u2019s backroom staff after recently stepping down as owner and chairman of Ilkeston Town, a club he purchased from Alan Hardy back in 2019.<\/p>\n

He began his touchline career at United in 2015 as Under 21s manager before stepping into the role as assistant to Martin Carruthers a year later and currently holds a UEFA A License.<\/p>\n

As a player, Clifford played for the likes of Mansfield, Boston United, and Chester City, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels really good to be back,\u201d he said prior to overseeing his first training session on Thursday. \u201cIt was nice walking through the gates again and, although it\u2019s been a few years, it felt like I\u2019ve never been away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to get back on the grass \u2013 I\u2019ve missed it,\u201d he added, when asked his decision behind the switch. \u201cI\u2019m a football person and definitely not a boardroom person \u2013 my day in, day out needs to be on that pitch with players and help Basford win games.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, we\u2019re about winning football matches and we hope we can get plenty of wins whilst I\u2019m here \u2013 we want to win games of football.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to take my time getting to know the gaffer [Steve Chettle] and Michael [Assistant, Leslie] and how they work and how they want the lads to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know a few of the players but it\u2019s been a long time and I need to assess where we\u2019re at and \u2013 hopefully \u2013 begin stamping my authority on a few areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bring enthusiasm and experience at these levels; understanding how to win games of football and get the best of the players.<\/p>\n

Boss Chettle added: \u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic appointment. I\u2019ve known Mark a long time and what he did here at Basford before with Martin [Carruthers], as well as the great work he did at Ilkeston in reviving the football club and getting the community back on board.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs he mentions, he\u2019s a football person and to have another member of staff to support us and take us where we want to go can only be great.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve asked Mark to bring a different dimension to the backroom. I\u2019ve said that I don\u2019t want somebody who is going to just sit there and not say anything \u2013 I want an individual who, if they see it, say it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis needs to be an open relationship between all of us and I don\u2019t want someone who asks, \u2018have you done this?\u2019 I want you to go and do it yourself.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael Leslie has done some amazing work behind-the-scenes, but \u2018Cliffy\u2019 is a bit more experienced, a bit wiser in some ways, shall we say.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got to get to know how I work, and we\u2019ve already sat down, but he\u2019ll take his time and make sure he gets everything right before he starts commenting on things and we need to ensure we\u2019re all doing things properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

United Chairman Chris Munroe: \u201cI am absolutely delighted to welcome \u2018Cliffy\u2019 back to Basford.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoanne [Wife] and I have massive admiration for him as a person, head coach and his wonderful family.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur club objective remains very focused on promotion \u2013 either this season or next \u2013 and Mark, along with all our first team and academy coaches, will provide massive support to Steve in getting us to our final goals.\u201d<\/p>\n
