Local volunteer Kieren Thompson has been awarded as the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero Award Sports Personality of the Year for 2019 in a star studded awards ceremony in Aberdeen last night.<\/p>\n
Thompson who runs the community project titled \u2018Helping Kids Achieve\u2019 in Bulwell is a Nottingham man who grew up locally and was hospitalised as a teenager after being badly beaten in an attack.<\/p>\n
The now 31 year old said that particular incident \u2018inspired him\u2019 to make change in Nottingham and stop youngsters getting into similar situations across the city\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n
Thompson who has set up a basketball team as well as running a four night per week project set up \u2018Helping Kids Achieve\u2019 with his own money and encourages young people to volunteer and take up leadership roles having won local awards for doing so.<\/p>\n
This national award however is recognition across the country for what Thompson has achieved with him joining 2016 winner Marcellus Baz as recent winners from Nottingham giving a real proud acclaim to the city in what he\u2019s achieved.<\/p>\n
Thompson on receiving award stated “First of all I want to say thank you to mum for believing in me.”<\/p>\n
“Secondly I want to thank my volunteers. I also want to thank all my young leaders, what they are doing is amazing. They are setting an example for the younger kids below them.”<\/p>\n
“I want to thank all the young people that come to my sessions, without them it wouldn’t be anything.”<\/p>\n
“Last but not least I want to thank all the parents that bring their young kids down to the sessions. What they do is amazing as well.”<\/p>\n
All at Nottingham Sport want to congratulate Keiren for supporting the counties youngsters through sport and giving them an inspirational platform that can help them achieve good things through what he does.<\/p>\n
