The Lexus Nottingham Open is set to make history this year with the introduction of a brand\u2011new Learning Disability and Autism (LD&A) tournament, giving the best of British and international players the opportunity to compete during the LTA\u2019s grass court season.<\/span><\/p>\n

British players including Oliver Beadle, Fabrice Higgins, Aidan Moody, Joshua Kerr, Max Mundy, Anna McBride, and Lillie Mills will compete in a men\u2019s and women\u2019s tournament for the II1 classification. Crucially the tournament is fully sanctioned by\u00a0Virtus<\/i>, the international federation for athletes with intellectual impairments, giving the players a valuable chance to compete for ranking points.<\/p>\n

This milestone moment will take place during Learning Disability Awareness Week. The tournament will raise the profile of Learning Disability and Autism tennis, in line with the awareness week\u2019s theme of \u201cDo you see me?\u201d, which is all about people with a learning disability being seen, heard and valued.<\/p>\n

Learning Disability and Autism Tennis<\/b><\/p>\n

When it comes to tennis, a learning disability includes conditions such as\u00a0Down\u2019s Syndrome, Asperger\u2019s Syndrome,\u00a0Autistic Spectrum Disorder\u00a0(ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).<\/p>\n

Players with a learning disability have the opportunity to play tennis through the\u00a0LTA Open Court<\/u><\/a>\u00a0programme, a\u00a0national\u00a0scheme that\u00a0actively\u00a0promotes and delivers\u00a0opportunities for disabled people to get involved in tennis and padel.<\/p>\n

Competitive learning disability and autism tennis has three categories II1 \u2013 Intellectual Disability, II2 \u2013 Intellectual Disability and Significant Additional Impairment and II3 – Autism.\u00a0\u00a0The Lexus Nottingham Open tournament will be for players within the II1 classification, which is connected to having an IQ of less than 75.<\/p>\n

For those looking to compete, the LTA stages a year-round\u00a0disability tennis competitions calendar<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to give disabled people and those\u00a0with\u00a0long-term health conditions a chance to compete in\u00a0learning disability\u00a0and autism<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0deaf<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0para standing<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0visually impaired<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0wheelchair tennis<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The LTA runs\u00a0performance\u00a0programmes<\/u><\/a>\u00a0for Learning Disability, Deaf, and Visually Impaired Tennis, while financial support is also given to elite Para Standing Tennis by the LTA \u2013 giving more players the chance to represent Great Britain on the international stage.<\/p>\n

Lexus Nottingham Open<\/b><\/p>\n

The Lexus Nottingham Open will see eight men and eight women with II1 classifications compete in the LD&A tournament, which will take place alongside the women\u2019s WTA 250 event and men\u2019s ATP Challenger Tour. The LD&A tournament will take place from 19\u00a0<\/sup>\u2013 21\u00a0<\/sup>June.<\/p>\n

The LTA will also be bringing together key delivery partners to celebrate the work we have done together to grow learning disability tennis and develop plans for the future.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the Lexus Nottingham Open will be staging a wheelchair tennis exhibition with top British women\u2019s and quad wheelchair tennis players on 20\u00a0<\/sup>– 21 June.<\/p>\n

Get In and Go wheelchair tennis taster sessions, powered by Lexus, will allow spectators to try wheelchair tennis using specialist sports wheelchairs, provided by Alfie Hewett.<\/p>\n

A landmark year for disability tennis<\/b><\/p>\n

The introduction of the LD&A tournament at the Lexus Nottingham Open, has been made possible by a significant increase in LTA investment in disability tennis competitions, with\u00a0an uplift of\u00a0nearly 25%\u00a0of\u00a0LTA funding in 2026<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Visually impaired, para standing and deaf tennis will see investment to\u00a0showcase\u00a0British talent in\u00a0exhibitions\u00a0and\u00a0competitions\u00a0in 2026.<\/p>\n

In the 50th\u00a0anniversary\u00a0year\u00a0of the invention of wheelchair tennis,\u00a0LTA investment in wheelchair tennis during\u00a0the 2026\u00a0grass court season will also increase by\u00a0over\u00a020%.<\/p>\n

Learning Disability and Autism Tennis Tournament Director, Rebecca Brook<\/b>\u00a0said, \u201cProviding valuable opportunities for learning disability and autism tennis players to compete is a key part of the LTA\u2019s work to make tennis more inclusive for disabled people and those with long-term health conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are delighted to give the best of British and international learning disability and autism tennis players the chance to compete for ranking points and showcase their sport at the Lexus Nottingham Open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lexus Nottingham Open Tournament Director, Amy Hitchinson\u00a0<\/b>said, \u201cWe are so excited to be staging the first Virtus-sanctioned learning disability and autism tournament at the Lexus Nottingham Open alongside the return of our wheelchair tennis exhibition match.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an important opportunity to raise the visibility of learning disability and autism tennis and fans are going to be in for a treat, watching some of the world\u2019s best players competing on grass.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tickets are still available for this summer\u2019s Lexus Nottingham Open, with Centre Court tickets starting from \u00a314 for adults and \u00a36 for kids, with grounds admission tickets starting at \u00a312 for adults and kids for free. All tickets can be purchased at tickets.lta.org.uk.<\/p>\n
