Nottingham Forest 0-3 Southampton<\/strong> (WSL 2) 02.05.26<\/p>\n

It was a good season, if not a great first season back for Nottingham Forest who after thirteen years in the third tier of women’s football ended their first at the second tier in some time with a seventh placed middle of the road ending.<\/p>\n

It was a middle or the road performance against a Southampton side that started the day in sixth, Forest’s objective was win to leapfrog their matchday rivals but it wasn’t to be as the Saints set out from the off to take all three points home to Hampshire.<\/p>\n

Michaela McAloine would after just sixty seconds put the Saints in the lead, this already after Simon Parker’s team had a shot from the half way line straight from kick off.<\/p>\n

McAloine thundering home a shot from the edge of the area which Emily Batty could only watch crash home off the crossbar.<\/p>\n

One became two after just 26 minutes when Megan Collett swung a right foot at a bouncing ball inside the area, the Saints in full control as they eyed up a possible fourth placed finish with results going their way.<\/p>\n

Those results didn’t all go to plan as Bristol City were busy thumping Sheffield United, but fifth spot very much on, had Southampton the aggressors, whilst Forest began to play at last, they ended the first half without really troubling Stenson’s net, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah going closest with an effort tipped onto the bar before heading wide from a corner five minutes before going into the break.<\/p>\n

Forest made a half time change with Joy Omewa, quiet in attack, replaced by Aimee Claypole, but it was Southampton despite a lot of controlled possession from the Reds, who would have the attacking edge, set free late on they forced Batty in to a save before Mary Bashford bundled home the rebound, an easy victory that ended a season a little disappointing, Forest had recently gone four without defeat (three wins and a draw) whilst Southampton end the campaign fifth, unbeaten in five.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, desperate drama during the last day inevitably folded as Charlton Athletic started top, but finished the season third, they hosted second placed Birmingham City who won 2-0 at the Valley to take the title by two points, Crystal Palace who had a shot at being crowned champions had Charlton and Birmingham drew, they thumped bottom of the table Portsmouth 6-1 to end the season in second place, the top two automatically promoted into the newly expanded WSL whilst third place Charlton now have to go to Leicester City who will finish bottom of the top tier, the winner of that at the King Power will get to play in the WSL next season, the losers rewards will be at least two games against Forest in WSL 2.<\/p>\n

Reds Manager Carly Davies might be disappointed with how her sides season ended here today, but it’s been progress since day one of their first back in thirteen years, Forest can be proud of their achievements, in more than holding their own, after a good start to the season, a tricky middle, and a decent end, but not today, Forest can go again and recharge their batteries this summer, ahead of more potential progress as they aim to be an elite force in the women’s game.<\/p>\n
