Mansfield Town Manager Nigel Clough has been busy working on improving his squad ahead of the new campaign, what will be his first full season in charge of the Stags, with a marquee capture of Leyton Orient striker Danny Johnson who scored an impressive twenty goals for the O\u2019s last season.<\/p>\n
28-year-old Johnson who\u2019s been prolific for the likes of Guisborough and Gateshead in non-league football returned his best ever Football League tally with 17 last season following his move to Brisbane Road from a spell in Scotland that included stints at Motherwell and Dundee.<\/p>\n
The Middlesbrough born forward stated \u201cI\u2019m delighted to be here and I\u2019m looking forward to the new season.\u201d<\/p>\n
He followed \u201cAfter discussions with the gaffer here, everything fitted with what I was after.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a great meeting with him, that\u2019s one of the main reasons why I came to the club. When you sit down with a manager and everything clicks in terms of what he can give you and what you can learn, that\u2019s the selling point to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Clough himself a forward born in the North East stated \u201cWe needed a goalscorer and that\u2019s where Danny fits the bill.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were impressed with the variety of goals he scored last season, with not too many situations and chances created for him. He scored 20 goals last season and I\u2019m hoping that with the way we play, and the number of chances we create for him, he\u2019ll get even more.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt 28, I think he\u2019s in his prime in terms of scoring goals. I\u2019m hoping his experience will come together to ensure that he\u2019s a very good signing for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
As well as the capture of Johnson on a two-year-deal, the club are also delighted to confirm the permanent year-long signing of Stephen Quinn who last season played 23 games under Clough following his loan move from Burton Albion.<\/p>\n
Whilst the 35-year-old is at the twilight of his career, the former Sheffield United midfielder and Republic of Ireland international will add huge experience to the team going forward with Clough stating \u201cI think everyone saw his attributes in the last few months of last season.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe quality he brings us on the ball stands out at this level. His hunger and desire are evident daily, and we\u2019re delighted to have him board for next season.\u201d<\/p>\n
Finally, two young players have also extended their contracts at Field Mill as midfielder Keaton Ward and left back Jadon Charles, son of former Forest full-back Gary, have both agreed one year contracts that will see them continue their growth following moves from Barnsley Academy and Derby Academy respectively.<\/p>\n
Last season 21-year-old Ward made one start and six substitute appearances for the Stags whilst Charles, still only nineteen, appeared twice as a sub.<\/p>\n
