Hot Notts Hit Crawley For Four
Second half substitute, Tyrese Hall, netted twice in the closing twenty minutes as Notts County scored four for the second time this season, following a 4-0 home win over Crawley Town in EFL League Two on Saturday afternoon.
The victory saw Martin Paterson’s Magpies rise to seventh place, into the early playoff places, and seven off leaders Gillingham, after nine games.
Another home substitute, Jayden Luker, he and Hall having come on in the sixty-seventh minute, also had an enjoyable cameo, providing three assists in a riotous closing stage for the hosts.
Both Alassana Jatta and Ton Iorpenda wasted first half efforts for the hosts who went in a goal to the good at the break, although it could easily have been more; the goal, that came courtesy of Scott Robertson on the stroke of half time.
Magpies captain, Matthew Palmer played in Robertson who drifted through the visiting defence, and curled the ball past visiting shot-stopper, Harvey Davies.
Crawley dealt their hand first, making a trio of changes less than ten minutes after the restart but it would be the hosts’ duo, fifteen minutes after Crawley manager Scott Lindsey had made his, that proved the difference.
Iorpenda and Conor Grant were replaced by Luker and Hall, and that proved decisive, with the 20-year-old Luker turning provider for the three goals for the hosts; the first assist gave another 20-year-old, Hall, on-loan from Tottenham Hotspur, his first of the game on seventy-one minutes, sliding a low effort past Davies following a quick break.
Luker then turned provider for Jatta to add County’s third with fifteen remaining, Davies finding Jatta’s angled drive difficult to stop at his far post, whilst in added time Luker, on loan from Luton Town, added a third assist of the afternoon when giving Hall his second, and County’s fourth of the game.
With Paterson’s Magpies sitting in seventh, a point behind the two sides, Grimsby Town and Chesterfield, directly above them, they now look forward to a trip to mi-table Crewe Alexandra next Saturday (27 September), in what is a lunchtime kick-off.
NOTTS COUNTY – Kelle Roos, Lewis Macari, Rod McDonald, Jacob Bedeau, Nick Tsaroulla (Maziar Kouhyar, 80), Scott Robertson, Matthew Palmer (capt), Jodi Jones (Barry Cotter, 74), Tom Iorpenda (Jayden Luker, 67), Conor Grant (Tyrese Hall, 67), Alassana Jatta
Meanwhile, in EFL League One, Nigel Clough’s Mansfield Town side slipped to a stoppage time defeat, whilst finishing with ten men, away to Port Vale.
Defeat for the Stags saw them slip to thirteenth in the table as captain Ryan Sweeney was dismissed inside fifteen minutes, being shown a straight red for fouling Ruari Paton, before Devante Cole opened the scoring early in the second half.
Stags shot-stopper, Liam Roberts, kept the hosts at bay whilst Rhys Oates looked like he’d salvaged a point for Clough’s charges, controlling Max Dickov’s ball beautifully before cutting inside and firing into the top corner.
But it wasn’t to be for the Stags as Will Evans conceded a stoppage time penalty with which Ronan Curtis fired home the winner; the Stags will now dust themselves off and welcome fourth bottom Rotherham to the One Call Stadium next Saturday (27 September) afternoon.
