Lincoln Knock Stags Out Of Trophy
Mansfield Town 1-3 Lincoln City (Football League Trophy Group E) 06.10.20
It was another defeat for Mansfield Town last night as the Stags were well beaten at home to Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy.
Graham Coughlan’s side have now lost five of their seven games in all competitions this season (drawing the other two) and the loss at Field Mill last night was the third in a row for a Manager that might now feel under pressure due to the Stags slow start.
Lincoln took the lead on the half hour when Jamie Soule tapped home a rebound from an initial good save by Aidan Stone. Gordon dragged a chance wide of the mark to level before Edun hit the side netting as Lincoln attacked. The Imps in at the break with a slender advantage.
In the second half Stone denied Scully with a terrific save that again fell to Soule, this time the young striker couldn’t convert, dragging his shot wide, but moments later Scully made it two as the away side took advantage of sloppy defending from Mansfield.
Reid went close for the Stags before Archibald all but sealed the win, his goal on 63 minutes made it all but impossible for a comeback to have any effect on the outcome with Lincoln aiming towards a qualification place in the group stages, the Stags sadly bottom all but down and out.
There was some positive news though, Stags defender Rollin Menayese proving he has attacking prowess too after heading home a Mal Benning corner for his second goal of the season. Too little too late for a side now knocked out of of the competition with just the league and FA Cup now left to play for.
The Stags still have Scunthorpe to face in the final group game but they won’t be progressing further, two defeats from two group games see’s them out of the competition as attention now draws to Stevenage back in bread and butter at the weekend.
Stags: Stone, O’Driscoll, Sweeney, Menayese, Gordon, Perch (Smith 57), Charsley, Benning, Sinclair (McLaughlin 58), Bowery (Maynard 57), Reid.
