Notts Emphatic In Local Derby Win

Notts County 3-0 Chesterfield (National League) 01.02.20

Notts County romped to home victory against struggling Chesterfield at Meadow Lane this evening eventually winning 3-0 but the win for the Magpies came not without a scare.

The home side started the match very well, Neal Ardley’s men always neat in possession created the first opportunity of the game on 10 minutes with Enzio Boldewijn crossed to Rawlinson who headed down and against a post with Wes Thomas unable to divert the rebound towards goal.

On 16 minutes Boldewijn curled a stunning free kick against the bar, the second time Notts would hit the woodwork before the lively Dutchman went down the left hand side crossing for Thomas who headed over on 36.

It seemed that Notts would be made to make their early chances pay as Chesterfield striker Boden was dragged down by Brindley inside the box. The Referee awarded a penalty but in front of the Kop and against a goalkeeper that was training with him just a week or so earlier Boden picked himself up nervously before tamely placing a penalty to the keepers left with Fitzsimons the hero diving the right way to deny the Chesterfield striker.

To the away sides disappointment that seemed to spur John Pemberton’s men on as after a flurry of pressure Denton flicked over from a corner before the Spireites smashed the bar all be it when the whistle had gone for infringement.

Notts fought back with their own chance when Thomas forced Jalal to save but the two sides went in at the break goalless.

After the interval it was the away team who looked to start the second half as they finished the first in search of an opening goal but that came from Notts County when Boldewijn picked the ball up on the half way line, turned and unleashed a stunning right footed shot high into the corner past the away sides keeper Jalal. A contender for goal of the season? One that even Michael Doyle would be proud of.

Three minutes later Boden tried his luck in a similar fashion to Boldewijn smashing the Notts crossbar with a long distance dive of his own but in an action packed start to the second half it was the Magpies who would double the lead when Kyle Wootton headed in after a fabulous left footed cross by Cal Roberts making his home debut.

Chesterfield continued to create chances themselves as they looked to halve the deficit with Buchanan hitting a long range shot forcing the best out of Fitzsimons who wasn’t going to let his former team mate score and the Magpies wrapped things up when Jalal spilled a hard low shot by Boldewijn for Wootton to tap home.

County: Fitzsimons, Rawlinson, Kelly-Evans, Lacey, Brindley, Rose, O’Brien (Crawford 79), Thomas (Dennis 77), Roberts (Bird 82), Boldewijn, Wootton.
