Gainsborough Trinity 1-0 Basford United (Northern Premier League) 01.02.20

Basford United’s six game unbeaten run came to an end in a tight 1-0 loss away to Gainsborough Trinity. The game lacked any real quality from either side until the 77th minute when Alex Wiles smashed home what was the winner.

There was one change from the Basford side that beat Witton Albion in their last game. Tyrese Sinclair came in for his debut, starting in place of Nat Watson who dropped to the bench.

In just the seventh minute of the game Gainsborough had the first chance of the afternoon. Nicky Walker capitalised on a mix up between Matt Thornhill and Stef Galinski but the latter of the Basford pair did well to recover and make a good tackle. Walker was in again minutes later and this time he got his shot off only to see it blocked by Lewis Carr.

James Reid then saw a tame effort saved up the other end as the hosts continued to great the better opportunities without forcing Kieran Preston into any work in the Basford goal.

It was Basford who had the first attempt on target of the game. Kane Richards worked the ball into the path of Ash Worsfold and his effort was well saved by George Willis in the Gainsborough net.

Neither side then had anything to shout about as the game remainder of the half ticked down without incident.

The start of the second half saw Gainsborough have an early chance but Alex Wiles could only find the side netting before Greg Smith was inches away from meeting a cross from the right. They then had their first attempt on target but Will Thornton’s header was easily saved by Preston.

Substitute Jordan Adebayo Smith caused Basford some issues just after the hour mark. The forward deflected the ball off the on-rushing Preston but could not get a shot off towards the vacant net as it ran out for a corner that came to nothing.

Reid, who is normally reliable from set-player, saw a free kick sail out of play before Basford had a corner that ended with a free kick for Gainsborough.

On 77 minutes the game saw its first real of piece of quality and that brought with it the first goal of the game. Adebayo-Smith held off his man after a good passing move and slid in Wiles who smashed the ball into the back of the net.

With just five minutes left on the clock Basford had their first real sight of goal in the half. The ball dropped nicely for Matt Thornhill and his well hit volley was saved by Willis.

Despite a later push from Basford they failed to create any opportunities to earn a point as Gainsborough held on for all three points.
