Notts Make Goalkeeper Switch
Notts County have signed Goalkeeper Joe McDonnell on loan from AFC Wimbledon until the end of the season whilst Ross Fitzsimons moves back to Chesterfield on loan after only two days ago playing an absolute blinder against them.
Fitzsimons was originally scheduled out to Chesterfield on 16th January but called back to Notts eight days later following an injury to first choice goalkeeper Sam Slocombe with the London born shot stopper chosen on Saturday to play against a team who he trained with the week previous.
The extra training at the Spireites paid dividends with Fitzsimons playing a blinder, saving a penalty with the score at 0-0 and helping Notts to a much needed win.
Magpies boss Neal Ardley however has made no secret about needing another choice to come in for Slocombe who injured a thigh ten days ago and raiding his old club Wimbledon for the 25 year old McDonnell was the best way to move with assistant Manager Neil Cox who also worked with the keeper at Wimbledon stating “We mentioned we knew Joe and they sent us some names, all of whom our goalkeeping coach Jake Kean did a lot of research on, and in the end we made a collective decision to go for Joe.
“Over the last four years he’s been unlucky to have been in and out of the first team at Wimbledon, with players like Aaron Ramsdale keeping him out, so he is delighted to have the opportunity to come here and show what he can do.”
“He’s a good age, a calming influence on the pitch and a great lad to have in the dressing room, so this is a great opportunity for us as well as him.”
McDonnell is likely to go straight into the starting lineup on Saturday and keep net for County’s Buildbase FA Trophy Third Round tie at Yeovil.
