Wildcats Win On WBBL Return

Nottingham Wildcats won their first match on court since covid hit the WBBL season earlier this year, causing disruption and abandonment towards what was the business end of all basketball competition in the UK from March onwards.

Today, having finally received government backing and having support from competition organisers the Wildcats were able to start a new season with ‘elite level sport’ going ahead all be it behind closed doors for now.

We at Nottingham Sport however were at least able to show the match live via YouTube thanks to a Wildcats streaming service (see here) and what a way to enjoy our first taste of live basketball as the hosts beat a Newcastle Eagles side in the group stages of the WBBL Cup.

The North Group match, one of three WBBL games played today, went the way of Nottingham who eventually took the tie 64-51 with 17 points for Jasmine Joyner, 16 for Simone Costa and 15 for Chelsey Shumpert amongst those who netted baskets.

A great performance from Kenrick Liburd’s side who now go into the next match with Leicester Riders in a fortnight full of confidence after a match winning start from such a long lay off too, what a good feeling to be back with a victory, what a great feeling to be back on court.
