Broad Recognition For England’s Best

Nottinghamshire and England fast bowler Stuart Broad has been nominated for the 2020 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award today after a magnificent summer of cricket where he was England test player of the summer having taken 29 wickets during two series’ against West Indies and Pakistan, including the most memorable of all, his 500th test wicket and that of West Indian batsman Kraigg Braithwaite, when Broad became only the seventh man in history to hit such huge milestone.

Broad’s year didn’t actually start that well with England, dropped for the first test of the summer he returned with a man of the match display in the next game and never looked back as he ended with sensational figures of 13.41 as he lead the way of the countries wicket takers.

With the bat he even managed a 33 ball half-century from number ten, the third fastest ever by an England test player.

Broad who now has 517 wickets in 143 tests said on hearing he was nominated earlier today “It is such a huge honour, I’ve watched that show since I was a little kid”

The 34-year-old joins Lewis Hamilton and Jordan Henderson, Hollie Doyle and Ronnie O’Sullivan as a contender for the lucrative gong whilst Marcus Rashford will be given a special award honouring his work outside of football in helping raise awareness of child poverty.

Broad is hoping to join fellow-Nottingham born winners Jayne Torvell & Christopher Dean to win the long-standing award which dates back to 1954 and was most recently won by his England team-mate Ben Stokes in 2019.

This years winner, as always in recent times, will be decided via a public vote with the show aired live by the BBC on Sunday 20th December 2020.
