Convincing Notts Hit Top Form
Nottinghamshire thumped Somerset inside three days to send a message to the rest of the County Championship Division One teams that the club mean business this year as they chase a Lords Final and a first ever Bob Willis Trophy.
It was a first County Championship win in the south-west since 1984 and it was pretty much all over by day two of the match, Notts put into bat, would make a first innings score of 448 thanks largely to a first ever century down the pecking order by number eight Liam Patterson-White who’s innings took the total along towards a position the away side could barely lose from.
Joe Clarke had earlier scored 59 whilst Sam Northeast on debut scored 34, Steven Mullaney (42) and Tom Moores (46) had vital knocks before Patterson-White let leash, his 101 in 121 balls was largely assisted by a 31 from Ben Hutton and 51 from Luke Fletcher as the tail end played their part at both ends of the wicket.
By the end of day one, Somerset were heading towards the inevitable, seven down for 87 in their chase, early wickets for Luke Fletcher who ended with 4 for 21 did a lot of the damage, Fletcher is the nations finest bowler this year thus far with 54 competition wickets in the red ball format.
Hutton and Dane Paterson both with 3 for 42 helping along Somerset’s downfall, all out in the first innings for 107.
By the end of the third day it was equally as devastating, this time the hosts reaching 181 in veign, falling an innings and 160 runs short. A dominant display with bat and ball completed by the wicket taking of the Notts bowlers, Dane Paterson taking 4/46 in the second innings with Fletcher 3/29 including the last wicket of Jack Brooks.
Liam Patterson-White capping off a magnificent match with2/54 whilst Brett Hutton added another wicket to his collection.
