Reds Women Winning In The Rain
As with Saturday, the incessant weather conditions played havoc with the women’s game on Sunday also, Nottingham Forest Women, fortunately, seeing their home league game with Hull City go ahead, the Reds taking the points courtesy of just the one, second half goal, Charlotte Greengrass notching with a little over twenty minutes remaining.
Both sides would be seen to hit the woodwork in the opening exchanges, Tamara Wilcock seeing her effort go wide off the upright, both sides straining to make an impression on the game; Lyndsey Harkin, as usual, getting herself stuck in at both ends of the pitch.
The Hull ‘keeper was rather active in the second period, keeping out early attempts on goal from Gianna Mitchell, twice, Niamh Reynolds, and a cross-cum-shot from second half substitute Mai Moncaster, amongst them.
With the game heading towards the final twenty, a free-kick to Hull, following a challenge from Charlotte Steggles, is cleared well and, minutes later at the other end, Forest led, two of the hosts’ subs combining in Moncaster, and the scorer, Greengrass.
Chasing down a through-ball into the visitors box, Moncaster would win the battle with the onrushing ‘keeper and the loose ball would find its way to Greengrass, she wasting little time in slotting the ball calmly into the empty net.
Forest would again be seen to hit the upright, this time Rachel Brown seeing an effort go for goal-kick, whilst Emily Batty, in the Forest ball, was forced into claiming a high ball from another Hull free-kick.
Forest and Hull continued to create opportunities in the closing stages, neither side however able to breach the opposite numbers’ goal, the hosts claiming a hard-fought, 1-0 win.
Forest: Emily Batty, Lyndsey Harkin, Georgia Hewitt, Rachel Brown, Olivia Cook, Charlotte Steggles, Niamh Reynolds (Becky Anderson 69), Gianna Mitchell (Rosie Axten 60), Hayley James, Tamara Wilcock (Charlotte Greengrass 60), Naomi Powell (Mai Moncaster 60).
That weather, much to the chagrin of EMWRFL high-fliers, Mansfield Town, continued its havoc as, with the shots leading 1-0 at the interval, the referee would then proceed to abandon the game prior to the restart when hosting Nottingham Trent University in the quarter-finals of the Notts FA Women’s County Cup – Ellie Marshall had afforded the hosts an interval lead, with an assist from Georgia Gladwin, however, they must now go again.
Of the remaining ties in the competition, the match between Arnold Eagles Women and Sherwood Women has also been rescheduled for this coming Sunday; whilst both Nottingham Forest Women and Notts County Women have been awarded home walkover successes against Teversal Ladies, and Rise Park ladies, respectively.
The only league game to go ahead involving a Nottinghamshire side was in Division One North, SJR of Worksop Women edging a five-goal thriller at Grimsby Borough Ladies; Hannah Storey netted for the visitors inside the opening twenty minutes before a goal in each half from Stacey Buxton saw the three points go on the road, and move them up a spot to fourth.
The draws have also been made for the semi-finals of the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Cup and Plate competitions, to which there’s a Nottinghamshire side, Notts County Women, and Mansfield Town Ladies appearing respectively.
