Women’s Roundup: Eagles Progress
The two remaining ties in the Notts FA Women’s Senior Cup took place at the weekend, the two home sides both picking up victories to progress into the semi-finals, although Arnold Eagles required extra-time in theirs.
Hosting local rivals Sherwood Women, Neil Matthews’ Arnold side eventually made the final four with a 3-1 win, but at a cost after losing top scorer Natasha Leach to injury; she had however laid on the opener for Demi-Leigh Crofts at the start of extra-time.
Crofts would then turn provider for the Eagles, setting up Amy Gauvrit and Eve Shaw to book their place, although the margin could have been bigger, the visiting ‘keeper saving a penalty in extra-time to keep her side in with a slim, very slim chance, of getting something themselves.
Andi Bell’s Mansfield Town Ladies put the previous weekend’s abandonment disappointment behind them to comfortably book their place in the final four as well, when at home to Nottingham Trent University.
Leading 2-1 at the interval, goals from Shannon Purdy and a first of the afternoon from Ellie Marshall, Mansfield put the game to be in the second period with a further three from Marshall, she claiming a four-goal salvo in a 5-1 win.
In the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division, Adam Dunleavy’s Notts County Women moved into fourth place, four points behind Mansfield, with a 4-1 win away to bottom club Leicester City Ladies.
Leading by one at the break, County took the points with goals from Lashlea Francis, Sam Brooks, Amelia Holland, and Nya Chambers, City replying through Hollie Handisides; meanwhile Rise Park Ladies suffered a heavy defeat when away to Rotherham United Women, the hosts claiming a 4-0 victory of their own.
Meanwhile, there was a bad day all round for Nottingham’s red contingent as all three Forest sides fell to defeat, two whilst opposing rivals, Wolverhampton Wanderers Women.
Andy Cook’s first team fell to a 3-0 defeat in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier, Wolves taking the points with goals from Laura Cooper, Helen Demody, and Anna Prophet, the visitors leading by two at the interval.
The reserves side, coach by Sarah Richardson, in the Reserves Midlands league, fell 2-1 on the road with Summa Betts netting from the spot, however, goals from Bethany Grady and Chantelle Teare afforded the Black Country side the points – victory for Wolves opened up an eleven point gap between the top two.
As for Forest’s third string, in the EMWRFL Division One South, they lost 4-2 when home to Antsey Nomads, Holly Towers and Jessica Shaw netting for the Reds whilst the replies came via Carmelina Colangelo, Megan Kenney, Simran Singh, and substitute Ella Wortley – defeat leaving them in fifth place.
In Division One North, SJR of Worksop Women strengthened fourth place with a 3-2 home win over Sleaford Town Ladies, their goals coming from Beth Gingell, Chloe Mitchell, and Brooke Chapell.
The three games which were played in the Nottinghamshire Girls & Ladies League Senior Plate all resulted in away successes, Bingham Town top-scoring with an 11-0 thumping of hosts Meden Vale Colts, whilst WBC Women won 7-3 at Lowdham Colts, and Teversal ladies won 3-1 at Sherwood Colliery Development.
The one league game played, in the Seniors Division One, saw Keyworth United win 3-2 at home to Mansfield Town Development as Beth Mortiboy scored twice for the visitors, the hosts replying through Sophie Beresford, Serafina Rowden, and Kelly Clayton.
