Anderson Wins In Nottingham
Two-time champion Gary Anderson won all three matches in a night for the first time this season as he beat Michael Smith at the Motorpoint Arena to take the St Patrick’s Day prize fund in Nottingham and in doing so moving himself up the Cazoo Premier League table after six rounds.
Scot, Anderson edged past Welshman Johnny Clayton 6-5 in the quarter final match before beating fellow compatriot Peter Wright 6-3 in the semi-final and seeing off Englishman Smith in the final 6-4 to take home the £10,000 bonus.
The win is Anderson’s first night success of the season lifting him to sixth in the table on 7 points to join the likes of Wright, Clayton and Gerwyn Price with one win each.
Michael van Gerwen currently heads the table with two nights events won so far this season, he has 14 points with eight matches in all won during the competition.
Dutchman van Gerwen himself was beaten by Gerwyn Price 6-4 in the quarter finals last night with the Welshman losing to Michael Smith in the semi-final 6-3.
Earlier in the evening Smith beat James Wade 6-1 whilst Peter Wright reached the semi-finals with a 6-4 win over Joe Cullen.
Winner Anderson said after “I’m off the bottom of the table and I’m happy. Just to get two points would have done me, I’d have been happy.
“It was a struggle against Jonny, I played a bit better against Peter and I played well against Michael. When I got to near the winning line I was panicking a bit.”
Next week the season continues in Rotterdam before returning back to England and Birmingham at the end of the month.
