Southwell Take NSL Title
Southwell City, with one game remaining, claimed the Euro Soccer Nottinghamshire Senior League Premier Division championship on Saturday afternoon, wrapping it up with a 4-1 win away to bottom club, FC Cavaliers, the champions’ 21st win of the season.
Three of the champions’ goals were netted in the first half, Liam Moran opening the scoring after half an hour, further goals being added by Ben Selby, and Matthew Newton, Calum Law added a fourth with twenty remaining whilst the hosts replied through Blessing Adeleye.
City then celebrated their title in front of 248 supporters at their new Brinkley Sports Ground by drawing 1-1 in their final match on Monday afternoon against AFC Dunkirk.
Stapleford Town moved into second place with a 2-1 win away to Clifton All Whites FCB, whilst Woodthorpe Park Rangers are third in the table after they collected an 8-3 home win over Attenborough.
Alex Beno bagged a brace for fifth place Sandiacre Town, they defeating visitors Wollaton 4-2, and Awsworth Villa won by the odd goal in five away to FC Sez to round off the days’ action in the top division.
Division One would see Radcliffe Olympic take over top spot, on goal difference (one goal), when they edged hosts FC Geordie 4-3, as West Bridgford fell to a shock, 3-1 defeat away to second bottom Pythian.
Top Valley can still claim runners-up from West Bridgford, keeping up hopes of second place with a comfortable, 7-1 win, at home to Meden Vale Colts, Benjamin Cummings with a brace for the hosts alongside goals from Samuel Atkin, Jacob Gunn, Joseph Gunn, Callum McBride, and Kane Pearson.
Stapleford Reserves, who moved up a place to fourth bottom, were the days’ top scorers when hitting bottom club Calverton Miners Welfare for ten without reply; Triston Elson fired home a four-goal salvo, whilst Anthony Peach and Lettisier Flemings scored two apiece, Luis Bastos and Darryl Hawkins also scoring.
The remaining three games in the division all ended in 1-1 draws, between Hucknall Reserves and Kirton Brickworks, Ruddington Village and Beeston OBA, and Southwell City Reserves and Beeston.
