BUCS Big Wednesday Winners For Notts
All that sport, it would be rude not too give it a mention – #BUCSBIGWEDNESDAY in all its glory, was played out this past week, and Nottingham’s two universities, Nottingham Trent University (NTU), and University of Nottingham (UoN), they had an impressive TWENTY teams qualify, they certainly gave their all on finals day, across a number of sports.
Perhaps the highlight was the all-Nottingham final in the men’s Lacrosse, Nottingham Trent emerging victorious from a physical battle with the Uni of Notts, 8-5, although the women’s football may have a say in that, UoN easing their way to a more-than-comfortable, 6-0 win, over Loughborough, Clara John helping herself to a stunning, player of the match hat-trick, having raced into a 5-0, half-time lead.
Other successes came the way of UoN Hockey, following two, stunning battles, the women’s team successfully defending their title when defeating University of Exeter 3-2, whilst UoN men defeated Loughborough 4-3.
NTU the women’s Hockey Vase with a 2-1 victory over the University of Bath, and NTU women also claimed the Basketball Trophy when defeating Cardiff, 101-55, in a dominant final display, and UoN also took the title in the women’s Lacrosse as they saw off University of Exeter, 11-6 in their final.
UoN’s winning Basketball vice-captain, Charlotte Redhead, commented afterwards: “We didn’t have our full 12 players but the hard work of each of the team members meant we easily overcome the challenges.
“This is an excellent win and we’re really happy with the result!!”
The Lacrosse team meanwhile, they eventually dominated, leading 4-2 at the halfway mark, before a back-and-forth third quarter, before blitzing the fourth when going from 7-5, to 11-6, in the blink of an eye, thus marking a successful defence of their title.
There was mixed fortunes for Nottingham in the Table Tennis though, UoN defeating NTU, 10-6, in the men’s, whilst UoN women won 5-0 against UCL for a delightful, double for the Table Tennis Club; as for the Squash, UoN women won the National Championship with a 4-0 win over Imperial, the men losing out to the University of West England (UWE), 3-2.
Of the defeats, it was agonising for both the UoN American Football on Tuesday night, at one stage it looked like defending champions, UWE Bullets, were going to run away with the National Championship, but Nottingham rallied, going down 34-27 in the end; whilst in the Rugby League the following day, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) defeated UoN 28-24 in the men’s Trophy final, and end-to-end encounter that was level at 12’s at the interval.
In the American Football, the Bullets roared into a 22-0 lead before the #GreenAndGold pulled the game back to within six, 16-22, finishing the first half at 19-22; the visitors, and defending champions however, had just that little more in the tank come the end, keeping their noses in front to claim victory in what was eventually, a 63-point game.
Head Coach Jason Scott saying after their defeat: “It’s hard to process a loss in a national final, never mind a second one in consecutive years, but, when I look back on this season it will be with pride and satisfaction that we did a lot of impressive things.
“We introduced 32 young, British players, to the sport, many of which played meaningful reps in both the Green and Gold Team.
“Twelve first year players contributed extensively to the Gold team on game day.”
It was to be back-to-back, National Championship defeats for UoN women in the Fencing as well, Rachel Lever’s side losing 135-124 to Edinburgh, Notts facing an uphill battle for most of the contest; Lever though, is optimistic when looking forward, saying afterwards: “I’m so proud of my team mates – we’ve come such a long way.
“Last season was our first final and this year we’ve been extremely competitive and performed so well.
“With new faces set to join us next year, we already can’t wait for next season and hopefully going one better to secure the Championship gold in 2024!”
Durham University meanwhile defeated UoN women, 3-0, in the Volleyball final, as well as in the Water Polo, this time taking a 14-11 success in a thrilling contest.
