Retford Still Lead The Way

A summer Bank holiday week, and plenty of non-league action across Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, was witnessed in Nottinghamshire, with games in the United Counties, Central Midlands, and Notts Senior League, entertaining supporters from both near, and far.

The GCE Hire Fleet United Counties League would see Notts-based clubs in action in both their Premier North, and Division One, and with varying results, the former seeing a couple of local clashes as Sherwood Colliery saw off visiting Kimberley Miners Welfare 2-0, whilst Newark Town and Newark & Sherwood United shared four in a 2-2 draw.

Sherwood’s win, and the point for Newark Town, sees them both sharing joint-second, along with Heanor Town, two points off leaders Granthan Town, with a game in hand; at Debdale Park the hosts would claim the points courtesy of two, first half goals, as Jacob Pearce and Ryan Ingram combined for each.

The first, after twenty-five minutes, saw Pearce feed Ingram to net, then, minutes before the break the roles were reversed when Ingram released Pearce to fire home, they been enough to settle the contest as Kimberley sit in sixth, a point and four places off their hosts.

That was on the Bank Holiday Morning, and, two days later, Newark Town and Newark & Sherwood collided at the YMCA Community Village, and, following a goalless first half, the game sprung to life in the second when four goals were netted.

Both sides created chances in the first, but the respective shot-stoppers, Scott Loach (Blues) and Liam Flitton (Highwaymen) stood firm; it would be the hosting Blues that drew first, and second blood, with a brace from Louis Czerwak in the first fifteen of the second period.

The Highwaymen then scored twice in the final fifteen to earn a share of the spoils after Luke White slotted home a free-kick, and Aaron Coyle levelled up when one-on-one, minutes later, neither side able to finish the game off though.

Elsewhere in the Premier North, Hucknall Town drew 1-1 away to leaders Grantham Town, whilst there were 3-1 defeats on the road for both AFC Mansfield, at Boston Town, and for Eastwood CFC, at Heanor Town.

In Division One it’s Retford United leading the way, despite being inactive during the week, having a couple of points advantage, and games in hand, on the chasing pack, at this early stage; local rivals, Retford, are their closest, Notts-based challengers, they sitting fourth.

Hosting Stapleford Town on the Monday they eventually wrapped up a 3-1 win following a goalless, opening forty-five; a devastating, fifteen-minute spell either side of the hour mark put paid to the visitors’ chances after goals from Ahmed Tahar, Rory Coleman, and Silas Valladolid-Collins put the Choughs in control, Keiran Walker netted the visitors consolation.

Dunkirk moved into the top ten with a 1-0 win at home to Swallownest, Alex Beno with the only goal of the game, Clifton All Whites won by the same score when home to Sandiacre,

Shirebrook Town won 2-1 against visiting Dronfield Town, and it was honours even between West Bridgford and Sleaford Town.

On the Wednesday there was a 2-1 win for Southwell City at home to Staveley Miners Welfare, and a huge, 3-1 win for Clipstone, against visitors South Normanton Athletic; Christopher Okoye and Ethan Widdowson netted in City’s win, and the Cobras struck via Reilly Hodgkinson, Oliver Monington, and Kyle Bacon, they registering their second win of the season, in style.

In the Camper UK Central Midlands Alliance League Premier North there was a 3-1 home win for Worksop Town Reserves, against Rossington Main, overturning an interval deficit to move up to joint-second, and Ollerton Town came within a whisker of overturning a five-goal deficit, netting four themselves in the final twenty before losing by the odd-goal-in-nine.

Of the goals netted in those two games, Max Eastwood bagged a brace in the Tigers’ second-string victory, and Jack Noble snatched two as Ollerton attempted a miraculous comeback.

In the Premier South Selston picked up a 2-0 win at Blidworth Welfare with goals coming from Arthur Pashley and Liam Taylor, whilst Linby Colliery Welfare went down 4-1 away to Mickleover Athletic, and Mansfield Hosiery Mills lost 2-1 at home to leaders Borrowash Victoria.

There were also a handful of games played in the Euro Soccer Nottinghamshire Senior League Premier Division as Arnold Town won 2-0 at home to FC Cavaliers to keep up their early season challenge at the top, Akeem Campbell and Jake Ogden netting.

Meanwhile there was also home wins for both Collingham, and Awsworth Villa, they also in the top five; the former won 2-1 against visiting Southwell City Reserves, Harrison Gomm and Alex Mackinder for the victors and the latter won 3-1 against Kimberley Miners Welfare Reserves with the winners netting through Robbie Manners, Thomas Scott, and Ethan Shipstone.
