Steele Signs For Notts

Notts County have made the short term signing of goalkeeper Luke Steele as back up for the injured Sam Slocombe who could miss out on action for the next few weeks.

Peterborough born Steele now 36, most recently played for Nottingham Forest but started out at his home town club before moving to Manchester United as a youngster, going on to play for the likes of Coventry, Barnsley and Panathinaikos in Greece where he made 66 Greek Super League appearances.

At Forest who he joined in 2018, he was largely a back-up goalkeeper and made just a couple of first team appearances before a loan move to Millwall, the former England Youth and U20 international is likely to feature in County’s match at the weekend against Torquay United with Manager Ian Burchnall stating “Sam injured his groin at the weekend. He needs a scan but it looks like it’s going to be at least a couple of weeks, maybe a little bit longer.”

“We’ve had to act really quickly – it’s not an easy market to pick someone up in – but I think we’ve done really well to bring Luke in.”

On signing for Notts County, Steele delighted to be back playing football after being released by Forest in August, said “This club is fighting for something very important, which is exciting.”

“I feel really energised and excited to get back into it. I can’t wait to get on the training pitch and see where I am from there.”

Notts face third placed Torquay at Plainmoor on Saturday currently eighth and a place outside the playoffs but with games in hand still on those around them, a win would take the side back into the mix with still plenty of games left in the season for Notts and Steele to target promotion.
