Essuman Wins To Take Titles
Unbeaten Nottingham boxer Ekow Essuman produced an eighth-round stoppage against Welshman Chris Jenkins to become the British and Commonwealth welterweight champion on the undercard of the Joe Joyce victory verses Carlos Takam at Wembley Arena last night.
In a tight opening to the fight where Essuman used his flurry of attacks to gain advantage over a boxer who in return looked to pick his shots, the Ghanaian born 32-year-old dominated in the fourth round which led to Jenkins downfall, picking off his opponent before finally catching him with a big right hook in the eighth.
A series of shots followed with Essuman aggressively attacking Jenkins in the corner forcing the Referee to intervene and stop the fight leading to celebrations for the corner of a talented fighter that is now 15-0.
Essuman joins the great Kirkland Laing who sadly died this year, remembered as a Nottingham based boxer to win the British welterweight title, in a division that includes some talented young British fighters including Conor Benn, Josh Kelly, Lewis Croker and Michael McKinson, not too far away could be a shot at the Worlds for a man who already owns the European IBF title too.
When told after that ‘you’ve stopped Chris Jenkins, nobody stops Chris Jenkins’ Essuman simply replied “I’m not no-one, I’m the Engine”.
A fighter that is growing his reputation in boxing to elite status, one with a very big future indeed. When asked how he rated his performance last night Essuman stated “C+”. Room for improvement? The man himself thinks so which is a scary thought, to what lies ahead next? Let us watch this space….
