Four Star Worksop Hit Third
Undefeated at home, eight straight league wins, nine points off top spot with four games in hand, Craig Parry’s Worksop Town collected a 4-0 win over visiting Brighouse Town on Saturday afternoon, maintaining that stunning momentum which has lifted them to third in the Northern Premier League East Division.
Terry Hawkridge would open the scoring a third of the way into the clash with Brighouse following a pass from Liam Hardy, Hawkridge unleashing a rocket of a shot from fully thirty yards out, arrowing into the top corner.
The closing stages of the first half would see the Tigers add two further goals to their collection, Liam Hughes powering home a corner, before, minutes later, the trick was repeated, this time with Jack Broadhead, lopping the ball into the right side of the netting.
Leading by three at the break, it wouldn’t be long after the restart that the Tigers added a fourth, and Hughes’ second of the game (sixteenth for the season), the prolific scorer having been played in by team-mate, Hardy, fakes the visiting defence, before firing a left-footed effort into the back of the net.
Chances continued to flow for the hosts, Sam Wedgbury proving a nuisance, whilst the visitors having rare sniffs of Sebastian Malkowski’s goal, the back-line holding firm; late chances also came the way of Tomlinson, and Hughes, sniffing for a hat-trick.
Brighouse though, they kept the damage at four, Worksop meanwhile, could well be dreaming of greater things to come, and, on performances like this one, who’d blame them.
Worksop Town – Sebastian Malkowski, Regan Hutchinson, Josh Wilde (Deegan Atherton, 68), Sam Wedgbury, Hamza Bencherif, Jack Broadhead, Terry Hawkridge, Aleksandrs Starcenko, Liam Hardy (Ben Tomlinson, 74), Liam Hughes, Jay Rollins (Luke Hall, 56)
In the same division, Carlton Town were involved in a seven-goal thriller in the north-east, eventually losing 4-3 when in Stockton, the hosts’ Kevin Hayes slotting home a late penalty to seal the points; Carlton, they’d see goals come via Niall Davies, and a brace from Bradley Wells.
Basford meanwhile, they threw away a two-goal lead when at Stratford, in the Southern League Premier Central, the Notts side having raced into an early, two-goal lead, through Anthony Dwyer and Gregory Smith, the hosts earning a share of the spoils with two goals of their own at the death.
Across the United Counties, Premier, and Division One, there was to be mixed fortunes for Notts clubs, with only one of those winning in the former, lowly Eastwood CFC snatching a 1-0 win when home to Leicester Nirvana, Jack Thatcher with the only goal of the game.
None of the remaining Notts sides collected even a point, Newark & Sherwood going down 5-2 away to Quorn, Sherwood Colliery losing 4-2 at Melton Town, whilst AFC Mansfield and Kimberley Miners Welfare both losing 2-1 on the road, at Boston and Loughborough Students respectively.
Selston also fell to defeat, going down 2-0 at Sleaford Town to compound a bad day for the counties’ sides in the division; it is a tight one though, with just ten points splitting second place Melton, and tenth place Sherwood Colliery, Loughborough are five points clear at the top.
At the bottom end meanwhile, that of Eastwood, Mansfield, and Selston make up the bottom four, with Heather St. John’s propping them up.
Division One meanwhile, Radford have fallen off the pace at the top a little, suffering a 4-2 loss when home to Bourne Town, who are up to fifth, on Saturday afternoon; Conor Moore and Scott Litchfield had the Pheasants two goals to the good at the interval, but fell apart after the restart, losing 4-2.
Leaders Aylestone Park meanwhile were romping to a 5-1 win at home to fourth bottom West Brdigford, whilst Blasckstone saw off hosts Rainworth Miners Welfare, 4-1 ; Gedling Miners Welfare were beaten 1-0 at home to Saffrdon Dynamo, and Dunkirk defeated visitors Clipstone by the same score.
Liam Moran scored both goals as Southwell City won 2-1 away to Birstall United whilst Kieran Knight did the same in Hucknall Town’s 3-2 win away to Harrowby, and Newark Town, they romped to a 6-0 win in a local clash, home to Clifton All Whites.
Newark captain, Lewis Chambers, had the hosts a goal to the good at the interval, netting minutes before the break, ahead of opening the floodgates in the second period.
Chambers added his, and Newark’s second, within the opening minute of a delayed restart, before goals from first Rory Harrison, then George Asplin, extended the advantage to four, before the hour.
Jack Aitken made it five as the game headed towards the final ten, Asplin grabbing his second when rounding the ‘keeper, minutes later, wrapping up a big win for the hosts.
Newark Town – Nathan Burrows, Jackson Buckthorp, Jordan Haywood, Matty Clarke, Luke Andersen, Rhys Lewis, Jack Beckett (Ben Coleman, 75), Alex Hales, Lewis Chambers (Lucas Cotterill, 65; Sam Bartle, 86), Rory Harrison (Joe Aitken, 60), Rhys Harbottle (George Asplin, 51)
Elsewhere, Retford won 2-1 at home to Armthorpe Welfare, and Ollerton Town lost 1-0 at home to Harrogate Railway, in the Northern Counties Division One, and Teversal went down 2-1 away to Mickleover, whilst the opening round of the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Trophy kicked off, a couple of sides at sixes and sevens.
Both Linby Colliery Welfare, and Stapeford Town, hit seven on the road, at West Bridgford IIIs and Meden Vale Colts respectively, and Mansfield Hosiery Mills put seven past their reserves in a rare, in-house derby clash.
The Central Midlands League, Linby, their 7-0 win over the Nottinghamshire Senior League hosts, saw a hat-trick from Travis Shooter, alongside further efforts from Josh Melville, Alex Paterson, Sean Craven, and Jack Leverton.
Ryan Smith fired a four-goal salvo as Keyworth United progressed with a 6-0 win at Arnold Reserves, and Wollaton won by the same when hosting Bingham Town; Ravenshead won 6-3 away to Keyworth Reserves, and Ruddington Village eventually eased past hosts Teversal Reserves, 6-2, the two sides having been level at the interval.
