Tigers Have Holiday Weekend To Remember

It’s been a Bank Holiday weekend to remember for Craig Parry’s Tigers after back-to-back victories turned Worksop Town’s early season form firmly on its head.

Winless in their first three outings of their National League North campaign, successive victories, on Saturday at home to Southport, and Monday away to Peterborough Sports, has seen them move up to eleventh in the table, and just three points off the top five.

In hosting Southport at the weekend, the Tigers scored twice in the second half to wrap up their first three points of the season; goalless at the break, Lewis Whitham netted within minutes of the restart to put the hosts on their way after Joe Leesley, Liam Hughes and Vaughan Redford had linked up before releasing Whitham who fired hi first for the club, into the top corner.

Minutes later and that lead was doubled, again Leesley amongst it, his corner finding Aaron Martin who headed home; the Tigers had several more chances to add to their tally, but two goals was more than sufficient for the points.

Two days later and the Tigers made the trip to Peterborough, and took a second, three-point haul from the game, with one goal being enough to settle contest.

Again, goalless at the break, the solitary goal arrived at the death when a goalmouth scramble resulted in Martin netting his second in two games for the club; next up for Parry’s side, a home game against Chester (Saturday 30 August), a side level on points with them and pushing for the top five.

There was also action over the past 48hrs for Notts-based clubs in the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands, Carlton Town and Basford United both playing.

Carlton Town played twice, losing for the first time this season when home to Lichfield City, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon, before a quick-turnaround on Monday saw them earn a point in an East Midlands derby, away to Long Eaton United, Ashley Chambers netting in a 1-1 draw.

Basford meanwhile were inactive on Saturday, whilst on Monday were held to a goalless draw at home to Belper Town; the results for the two Notts clubs have seen Carlton slip down to fifth place, and Basford in eighth, with Corby Town the new leaders on a dozen points.

BASFORD UNITED – Matt Yates, Cormac Maher, David Chapman, Connor Dimaio, Ethan Stewart, Henri Wilder (capt), Eli Christie, Callum Cocks, Jack Goodman, Jordy Hallam, Kieran Cummings (subs – Lynden Joyce, Louis Nicholson, Finlay Armond, Wayde Hines, Saul Deeney)
