Women’s Round Up – Basford Win

The East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League is slowly kicking into gear and this past Sunday afternoon (14 September) there was a handful of games involving Notts-based clubs in their regionalised, Division One leagues.

Five Notts clubs were in action in Division One Central, with victories coming on the road for Basford United and West Bridgford, 2-0 apiece at Melbourne Dynamo and Sherwood respectively, and Nottingham Trent University, who won 4-2 away to Coalville Town Ravens.

Having won on penalties in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup the previous week, the Lady Ambers kept a second successive clean sheet with victory in Derbyshire against Melbourne Dynamo, the visitors netting via a long-range effort from George Gladwin, and a first for the club by Megan Wood.

West Bridgford won by the same scoreline when away to fellow Notts side, Sherwood, their goals coming via Eleanor Scotland and substitute Anna Desnos, and NTU began their campaign with a 4-2 win away to Coalville Ravens, Haleigh Finale with a hat-trick for the Uni alongside a goal from Claudia Dawkins.

The remaining game in the D1C would see University of Nottingham fall to an opening day 5-1 loss when home to Long Eaton United, Mia Newton scoring twice for the victors.

Division One North meanwhile would see the game between Belper Town and Notts County Development abandoned (new date to be confirmed), whilst Newark Town battled away when hosting Dronfield Town but ultimately fell short in a 3-2 defeat.

The visitors found themselves three-to-the-good just after the hour mark, but the Blues battle back to within a goal, unable to find an equaliser, as Connie Forman scored twice.

Further up the women’s footballing pyramid and Notts County’s firsts collected a comfortable, 3-0 home win over Sutton Coldfield Town in the National League Division One Midlands; Emily Brett scored a goal in each half for the Lady Magpies, and provided the assist for Lily Stevenson to also score.

It’s a win that presently sees them sitting in fifth place, with two wins and two losses from their opening four league games, and six points off early joint-leaders Peterborough United and Boldmere St. Michaels.

Meanwhile Nottingham Forest picked up their first win of the season, at the second time of asking, when away to Ipswich Town.

Sitting mid-table and level on points with Durham and Bristol City, the Reds took the points courtesy of Nahikari Garcia’s first goal for the club, within minutes of the restart of what was a tight, battling encounter.
