Notts Still In The Battle For Promotion

The final day of the EFL League Two season is going to be a rollercoaster for seven of the top nine sides, with the race for promotion going down to the wire.

In the mix for the third, and final automatic promotion spot, Martin Paterson’s Notts County, who sit fifth, two points off that coveted, third place.

Also vying to join the top two of MK Dons and Bromley, who are in a shoot-out for the title, in League One next season, are Cambridge United, currently sitting third, and fourth place Salford City, the trio all winning on Saturday.

County, they picked up a narrow, 1-0 win away to mid-table Colchester United, midfielder Nick Tsaroulla with the only goal of the game early in the second half.

Jayden Luker and Tom Iorpenda combined on the right, with the latter picking out Tsaroulla with a cut-back and he finished off a swift break, firing past Matt Macey in the home goal.

A game of few chances, it will perhaps be remembered more for the first half injury to County midfielder, Lewis Macari, he being stretchered off just before the half hour following a challenge on Owura Edwards, and was taken to hospital.

County striker, Alassana Jatta, saw a header saved by Macey just before the break, whilst late on in the contest Keanan Bennetts’ shot was also saved; the hosts’ only real effort of note went to Samuel Koffur, who headed over.

With their promotion rivals also picking up wins, County’s fifth win in their last ten (alongside five losses) is a much-needed, three points, in their quest for a top three finish.

Notts County – James Belshaw, Lewis Macari (Lucas Ness, 38), Rod McDonald, Jacob Bedeau (capt), Nick Tsaroulla, Tom Iorpenda, Oliver Norburn (Keanan Bennetts, 82), Jodi Jones, Jayden Luker (Scott Robertson, 68), Conor Grant, Alassana Jatta

As for the final day of the season, the afore-mentioned seven sides all with something to play for at the top end of League Two are Cambridge United (third, 81pts), Salford City (fourth, 80pts) and Notts County (fifth, 79pts), from which only one will take the final, automatic promotion spot, the other two will contest the play-offs.

Joining two of those three in the play-offs will be two from the next four sides, they being Grimsby Town (sixth, 77pts), Chesterfield Town (seventh, 76pts), Swindon Town (eighth, 75pts), and Barnet (ninth, 73pts), building up to what will undoubtedly be a dramatic, final day.

The fixtures for this upcoming Saturday (2 May) in League Two, affecting these seven sides, are as follows – Crawley Town vs, Salford City, Crewe Alexandra vs. Cambridge United, Harrogate Town vs. Barnet, Notts County vs. Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town vs. Chesterfield, and Tranmere Rovers vs. Grimsby Town.

Away from County’s home game with mid-table Bristol Rovers, at Meadow Lane, is the contest taking place at the Nigel Eady County Ground, eighth place Swindon hosting seventh place Chesterfield.
