Stags Win In Tough Conditions

Mansfield Town 1-0 Newport County (EFL League Two) 15.02.20

It was a much needed three points for Mansfield Town in tricky conditions at the One Call Stadium yesterday as Graham Coughlan’s men won only their third league game since the manager’s arrival in December.

A Danny Rose strike was enough to give the Stags all three points as the wind and rain disrupted any free flowing football opportunities with both teams resulting to playing percentages as they battled through the storm.

First to fall victim of the weather and slippery Field Mill playing surface was Newport’s Mickey Demetriou who’s simple five yard pass in the opposition half was fluffed under hit and cut out by Willem Tomlinson who found Maynard running the length of the field before shooting from 25 yards with his effort ricocheting off a defender back to Danny Rose who struck from the area right footed hard and low past King in the Newport goal.

Rose had a further chance shooting straight at the keeper before Maynard tried his luck from range after spinning delightfully away from his marker and in the second half a deep Charsley cross was met by Pearce only for his header to be saved well by King.

Newport themselves had a great opportunity to equalise when Gorman’s shot was deflected wide but the Stags held on to a vital three points that edges them nearer to guaranteed safety.

After the match Graham Coughlan relieved of the three points said ““We knew that the weather forecast wasn’t pretty so we knew the game was going to be like that,”

“It was a really big win for us. We deserve better than the results we’ve been getting as we’ve been controlling games, we’ve just had one or two mad moments.”

“I don’t want to get too excited because I need to be cautious. I want us to build on this and I want us to look forward to the next game.”

Stags: Stone, White, Pearce, Bishop, Maynard, Watts, Tomlinson, Sweeney, Hamilton, Charsley, Rose.
