Wildcats Given Final Reprieve
After losing the semi-final of the WBBL Cup by just two points in December, Nottingham Wildcats have been given a second chance for silverware after Sevenoaks Suns withdrew from the competition having made the decision to postpone all their matches until after the international basketball season window on 8th February.
The Suns were due to play Leicester Riders on Sunday 24th January in the final, but their withdrawal in relation to covid concerns means the side they beat, Nottingham, will take their place instead, which sets up a fantastic local derby, live in front of the Sky TV cameras a week on Sunday away.
With the BBL Cup final on the same day between London Knights and Newcastle Eagles, the WBBL Cup kicks off proceedings with a 12:30pm tip off time which is sure to start a fantastic show of basketball screened in households across the UK.
The Riders have so far this season got the better of the Wildcats in the two games played as back in November, Leicester comprehensively beat Nottingham 61-48 in the group stages of the cup.
In league matters the Riders edged a much tighter affair in December 69-64 which was the last time the Wildcats played, Nottingham however face Essex Rebels on Saturday coming before taking the trip to Wales to face Cardiff Met Archers in the league on Sunday ahead of the final against their biggest rivals the following weekend.
Nottingham won two of their three North group games to qualify for the semi-final where they lost agonisingly against Sevenoaks 67-69 but the 2018 winners will have another chance to take home the cup as Kenrick Liburd’s team will hope it can be third time lucky against Leicester too.
