Nottingham Forest have been drawn at home against Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup whilst Mansfield Town will face Middlesbrough at Field Mill.
The draw last night, live on BBC, left some Forest fans with an underwhelming taste of same old same old whilst other supporters are excited again, whetting their appetite for a top Premier League club coming into town.
Forest still have fond memories of a 4-2 third round win over the Gunners in 2018 when Eric Lichaj scored two goals to help knock the then holders out at a packed City Ground but the two sides have faced each other since then, Arsenal beating the Reds at the Emirates in the third round of the League Cup 5-0 in 2019 whilst the two teams previously met again recently at the City Ground in the same competition in 2016, Arsenal then winning 4-0.
Older Reds fans will remember a famous FA Cup win at Highbury in 1988 for Brian Clough’s boys when Paul Wilkinson and Brian Rice scored in the Quarter Finals during a fabulous 2-1 win, in 1993 Arsenal beat Forest in the fifth round of the competition 2-0 in London, Ian Wright then scoring both goals.
For Mansfield who beat League One Doncaster Rovers in the second round of the competition at the weekend, their reward is Championship opposition and Middlesbrough in round three, the two teams last met in 2008 at Field Mill when Boro beat the Stags 2-0 in the FA Cup fourth round and prior to that, the two teams last met in 1987, the last time the two clubs were both in the same division.
The third round will take place between the 7th and 10th January 2022.
