It was a narrow win, but a win all the same, for Andi Bell’s Mansfield Town Ladies, when they made the trip to Nottinghamshire rivals Rise Park Ladies, on Sunday afternoon, in the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division.
Victory would see them move within a point of leaders Northampton Town Ladies, and, with both sides still undefeated (Mansfield have drawn two of their seven league games) it could get interesting when they meet.
On Sunday though, and with Jade Henderson netting for Rise Park, the Stags fought for the three points, netting through Bethany Jones and a powerful, headed effort from Monica Bowley, thus taking all three points back to Mansfield.
All five Nottinghamshire clubs were in action in Division One North, and with two local derbies, it made for an interesting outcome.
Divisional leaders, Arnold Eagles, saw off the challenge of mid-table SJR Worksop 3-1, Natasha Leach helping herself to another brace, Eve Shaw also scoring for the victors, whilst Ellie Sims opened the scoring for SJR.
The other two games in the North would both see the victors notching five apiece as first Nottingham Trent University defeated Notts County Women Development 5-0, and Sherwood Ladies crashed to a 5-2 reverse when at Grimsby Town Sport & Education Women.
Elizabeth Stocks scored twice as the Uni went nap against County’s second string, further goals coming from Alice Rogers, captain Grace Miller, and substitute Julia Kings, whilst Sherwood’s consolations in their defeat came from Zoe Meyrick and Rebecca Firth.
Meanwhile, in Division Two South, Nottingham Forest Development are in joint-third, leading Oadby & Wigston Ladies on goal difference, the Reds third string seeing off hosts Loughborough Foxes Vixens Women 5-2.
Trailing undefeated leaders Derby County Academy Women (they’ve won eleven from eleven) by fifteen points, and with two games in hand, Isabella Hodson kept the momentum going with a brace (she’s now on thirteen goals), whilst Jessica Abdy (her ninth of the season), Olivia Standeven and Molly Towers, also registered.
The draw for the quarter-finals of both the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Cup, and Plate, competitions, was also made at the weekend; ties to be played on Sunday 6 February, and involving Nottinghamshire clubs, the following was released –
League Cup QF – Northampton Town Women vs. Nottingham Forest Women Development; Sherwood Women vs. Notts County Women.
League Plate QF – Loughborough Foxes Vixens Women vs. Mansfield Town Ladies.
