Traore Added To Magpies Attack

A relatively busy January transfer window at Meadow Lane, for both comings-and-goings, Stuart Maynard’s Notts County made just one, Deadline Day signing, and a somewhat interesting one at that.

In bringing in striker Mai Traore, from Norwegian side, Fredrikstad, on a two-and-a-half-year contract (option for a third, subject to international clearance and visa approval), the Magpies have signed someone with a vision for goals, and pace to match.

Born in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, the now 25-yearold front-man has some valued experience on the continent, playing for Swedish side Vasalunds IF, as well as the Norwegian pair of Viking FK (included loan spells in Belgium, with OH Leuven, and in Norway with Tromso) and most recently, Fredrikstad.

Averaging around one-in-three goals-per-game, Traore already has netted over fifty times during a career that, in recent times, has stuttered a little, he has however won a league championship with Vasalunds in 2020, and helping his last club, Fredrikstad, to the 2024 Norwegian Cup, on penalties, against Molde.

Traore also brings some international experience to Meadow Lane, he being a Guinean U23 international, scoring once in the 2019 U23s AFCON qualifiers, against Mauritania (15 November 2018).

Speaking of the signing of Mai Traore, Notts County Director, Richard Montague, said: “Mai is a really exciting signing for us, bringing pace, power and an eye both for goals and assists.

“He’s very effective in the press, his link-up play is strong and he’s left footed, which adds another dimension for us at the top of the pitch.

“While his performances in Scandinavia indicate that he’s more than capable of making an immediate impact for us, we feel he has huge potential to improve – and we believe he’s joining the perfect club to do that.”

Traore was the last of four players coming into Meadow Lane during the January Transfer Window, whilst three players have also departed; Will Jarvis (from Hull City), Charlie Whitaker (from Everton) and Zak Johnson (loan from Sunderland) have arrived, Cedwyn Scott (to Carlisle United), Dan Crowley (to MK Dons), and Kyle Cameron (to Barrow) have departed, Josh Martin and Aidan Stone have also left.
