Notts To Face Barnet

Notts County will face Barnet in the National League playoff semi-final on Saturday after the Bees beat Yeovil Town  at Huish Park in yesterday’s eliminator.

Barnet were eleventh in the National League table at the time of the seasons premature closure but were promoted to a playoff spot in eighth on a points per game basis having matches in hand on all of their opponents above them.

Against favourites Yeovil who finished the season in fourth, the Bees had to wait until early in the second half to take the lead when Paul McCallum netted his fifth goal in six games since signing from Solihull Moors and rode their luck at times as the home side pushed for an equaliser with some desperate although not always orthodox defending from the away side.

Barnet’s vulnerable defensive frailties may have been obvious to the watching Notts Manager Neal Ardley as they often missed to deal with a number of crosses into their box which resulted in more last gasp defending but their counter attacking qualities may be more of a concern to Notts County? A late Mauro Vilhete goal was a sucker punch blow to the Glover’s in a game that Yeovil largely dominated. The away side eventually going through 2-0 to set up a tasty encounter at Meadow Lane.

Notts and Barnet last met in August with the Bees beating the Magpies 2-1 in front of the BT cameras but that was a much different County side finding their feet in the division after relegation from the football league.

Notts will now get to work on shaping up their team to get the result they need with a Wembley final at stake for the winning team, but more importantly at stake will be an opportunity for promotion back to where both sides perhaps feel they belong.

Barnet certainly have flaws in their back four to suggest the attacking side of Notts can at least get shots at Nottingham born Scott Loach’s goal, but in return the Bees breaking might mean they are well suited to playing away in what now looks to be an intriguing match up.
