Newark’s Hunt Is Golden Girl (X4)
“Are you not entertained?” the words of Nottingham’s new, athletics golden girl who wrapped up an ultra-successful European Championships in Birmingham this past weekend with a FOURTH gold medal to her name.
Having already been successful in the 100m and 200m sprint events, winning both the semi-final (heat one) and final, and the semi-final (heat two) and final, in each discipline, the new ‘Queen of Athletics,’ aged just 24-years, continued to show her prowess in the relays as well.
It’s been a meteoric rise for Hunt, who was born in Newark, making her Olympic debut in Paris, 2024, where she helped the Team GB squad to silver in the 4x100m relay; she also claimed goal in the same discipline that year, in the Europeans in Rome.
The following year however proved to be a breakthrough year, on a global scale, for Hunt, adding a bronze at the Guangzhou World Relays, and silver at the Tokyo World Championships, the latter coming in the 200m sprint.
Then came a stunning 2026, Hunt backing up her Commonwealth Games silver medal in Glasgow, in emphatic fashion in Birmingham, earlier this month, the 2019 British Athletics Writers Association ‘Young Female Athlete’ winning not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR gold medals.
She even likened the experience to that of being on a rollercoaster; speaking to BBC Sport after her fourth medal she said; “Oh my gosh, I am over the moon.
“I think to finish it off with some of my friends in the sport is incredible.
“Me and Jeremiah (Azu) have the same birthday, so we’re kind of twins. To do it all together is incredible.”
This was following success, on Sunday evening (16 August) in the 4x100m mixed relay event, the first time that had been competed in at the European Championships.
Hunt’s three team-mates in the final, Jeremiah Azu, legendary athlete Dina-Asher Smith, and Zharnel Hughes, the quartet posting a time of 39.97, and finishing ahead of silver medallists, Germany (40.11), and bronze medallists, Spain (40.42).
Hunt continued by saying that; “The first time we did that changeover was an hour ago in the warmups.
“Look how smooth it was. Such professionals.
“When you’re queuing for a rollercoaster, and you’re seeing the drops, but when you get off you want to do it all again.
“I loved it.”
The Newark-born athlete’s stock had already risen during the week prior to the ‘main event,’ Hunt having seen off first Ewa Swoboda (silver, Poland), and Delphine Nkansa (bronze, Belgium) in the 100m, then Rhasidat Adeleke (silver, Ireland), and teammate Dina-Asher Smith (bronze, GB & N. Ireland) in the 200m, Hunt and her fellow Sprint Queens went all out on Saturday (15 August) night, in the 4x100m relay.
Alongside Dina-Asher Smith, Success Eduan, and Imani Lanisquot, gold was claimed in the final with a time of 42.05, finishing comfortably ahead of second place Switzerland (silver, 43.12), and third place Poland (bronze, 43.15)
Then came Sunday night, and history for Hunt, with her historic quadruple.
