Worksop Saved By Donations

The world’s fourth oldest football club Worksop Town have been saved after the club announced last night that they have managed to raise the £30,000 needed to survive.

After news broke out last month that the club were in financial trouble and potentially struggling to see the season through a plea for £30,000 went viral on social media as people from all over the country helped raise the amount with almost a third of it coming through a crowdfunding platform Just Giving (where you can still donate here).

The fabulous response has delighted the club with an announcement on twitter stating “We can confirm that you all have helped us raise over £30,000 to save the world’s fourth oldest football club! To everyone who has donated, shared and spread the word, thank you so much for your support!”

The people of Worksop and beyond have rallied around to raise cash for the President’s fund after Life President Keith Ilet initially made the plea on the clubs website to request help and contributions and ever-since from their ‘brothers in arms’ scarfs campaign and their celebratory ‘evening with legends’ event, they have finally managed to reach their objection.

From the Sheffield Steelers to the Daily Mail, people like Peter Crouch and Jeff Sterling, even ex-Tiger Chris Waddle all helping raise the issue which now looks thankfully (for now) resolved.

Football in the non-league’s is tough, a credit to those people who give up their weeks to run these clubs, to those players who travel the country for a game of football and who don’t always get paid as much as you might think.

A credit to everyone who rallied around this great club and helped raise the money for it’s survival.

In league action Worksop are comfortably mid-table in the Northern Premier League South East Division and despite losing their last couple of games should have enough points in the bag already to ensure their status in the division this season.

With regular crowds between 300-400 they have the fundamentals to kick on to be contesting for titles and playing in the division, perhaps even two higher at best. With the recent scare now put aside the future of the club looks more promising and hopefully the Tigers can get back to where they were when the likes of Chris Waddle was playing for the team in the early part of the Millennium.
