Hednesford Town 1-1 Basford United (Friendly) 12.09.20
Basford United ended pre-season with a 1-1 draw away to Hednesford Town. Matt Thornhill’s strike saw Steve Chettle’s side lead at the break after a good first half. In the second half they were on the back foot though and Hednesford pulled a goal back through Dan Turner’s header .
The hosts settled the quicker of the two sides but failed to test Jordan Pierrpont in the Basford net as their best effort in the opening exchanges was blocked by Lewis Carr. After some strong defending Basford had their first real chance in the 14th minute. Rev James burst away from several players and tried to chip the ball over the on-rushing Andrew Wycherley but the ‘keeper manages to send it for a corner.
There was nothing Wycherley could do about their next chance. James pulled the ball back for Thornhill and he guided the ball over the ‘keeper and into the far corner of the net to open the scoring.
The game then hit a period where it was end to end but neither side were able to test the two goalkeepers. A long ball for James was easily cleared by Wycherley and up the other end Jordan Pierrepont was there to calmly claim a cross into the box.
That trend continued as both sides traded possession before the hosts had two good chances in quick succession. A combination of Carr and Pierrepont was enough to see George Carter’s effort away and from the resultant corner Danny Glover headed wide at the back post as the score stayed 1-0 at the break.
The second half started in frantic fashion. Hednesford had a corner that after several awkward moments Basford managed to get clear. Up the other end Ryan Wilson’s free-kick dipped just over the cross bar.
Hednesford then came close again minutes later as Carter took aim from inside the area but his effort was inches over the bar. Just after the hour mark they had their best chance. A header dropped to the unmarked Jack Hallahan but he fired over the bar from just outside the six-yard box.
Basford’s defence was nearly rewarded as Kane Richards broke away from several players and squared for both James and James Carvell but neither could send them into a 2-0 lead.
They continued to defend well but with five minutes left their efforts were undone. A cross from the right was guided across goal and into the far corner by Turner for the equaliser.
Before the end Basford’s advantage was almost restored as the ball dropped to James inside the box but he could not make contact on the ball and the score stayed at 1-1.
